Won't Turn Over

Hi there, just finished fitting main things under bonnet, just wanted to see if I could get the engine to turn over. I need a new battery so new I could do it through that so I connected a battery wit leads to the starter motor and earth to the engine.

Great I get lights inside for power and oil pressure but when I turn the key nothing?

I can hear the starter motor popping to say its getting a live feed but nothing else from turning the key?

Any ideas on why this is happening?

Cheers Tom .

hi what starter motor do you have?
have you got the correct wires on the coils?
Is it points or electronic ignition?
if you have a relay connected?
have you checked the earth strap and live feed to starter?

It’s a 1993 so it has electronic ignition
pre engaged start I think
There are 2 relays under the passenger side of the bonnet.
And I’m connecting the jump lead from a good battery and clipping onto the starter motor main pin. And other just lead to a head nut to earth it. I have maged to get it to turn over half a rev by bridging the 2 studs on the starter but don’t think this is good pratice.

hi i wouldnt try that not good practice and you dont want to fry the dizzy module.
have a look at the coil wires and use a meter to check what you are getting at the +terminal.
unplug the relay and check the wires, what did you take out and put back in?

Sorry why do you mean by Take out and put back in?

you said you fitted main things?

I’m guessing the jump leads are not connected correctly. Charge the battery and connect the jump leads to the battery. Then try again. Has any work been done to the engine ?

he said fitted main things???

Oh it was a 1275 and now its a 1330, I’m getting battery after work so will see then .

i give up lol trying to see what you replaced and disconnected but
getting nowhere.

I have had the engine out so unless you think you can do this without disconnecting everything, I would say I disconnected everything! And I havnt replaced anything electrical all the same. Took pictures before I disconnected the coil so pretty sure I wired it the same. Just nothing happening when turn the key

if your starter motor worked when you bridged it that must be ok, so then id check the strap from the starter to solenoid, if thats good , try crossing your solenoid with a screwdriver and see if that works, make sure your batttrey is giving full wack so it throws the spinny bit , if you do this and your starter just spins its either dirty and not throwing it accross, or not enough power , or the teeth are shagged, hope that helps .

Righ ok, well I have 3 connections from the main pin on starter motor but nothing on the other pin you bridge to is that right?

thats a better answer. just state you used same parts next time, try taking out starter if its a pre engaged one and make sure its not in the pushed out or jammed in.
earth strap connected? you will of taken this off to remove engine. if electronic ignition try looking at module and make sure the 3 pin plug isnt pulled off as the loom can be tight around coil area. get a meter across coil and check you are getting volts. are the ht leads in correct order 1342 firning from rad. hope this helps mate.

yeah one pins is free. what volts do you have from live in (from battery)

Right have put new battery on, still no ignition lights but have just under 13 volts from the starter motor?

absalubtly nothing when you turn the key? there should be a “dunk” from the solonoid, have you tried crossing the terminals yet?

All fixed tuned out to be a crap relay I moved it and it flicked over
