Why Can't I Declare My Mk1 Sorn

I have just gone to sorn my mk1 which I’ve had for years but have never sorned before as when I last spoke to Dvla they told me it didn’t need to be sorn because of it’s aged. I was told by a few people that I should really sorn it to be on the safe side.

I just tried to do this online but they say I can due to changes with Dvla and that I will need to take documents to a local Dvla office with mot and insurance. Problem
Is the car hasn’t had a not since I’ve owned it as its a project.

Does anyone have any idea what’s going on?

I could be wrong but I thought that if a vehicle was untaxed and off the road before the SORN system started then it doesn’t need to be sorned unless you put it on the road and then in the future take it off again, then it will need to be sorned

^^^ thats correct if its not been taxed since 1997 i belive..

Not sure how accurate this is

http://www.selnec.org.uk/sorn.htm

I brought it in 2004 and they previous owner had it as a project before so hasn’t been on the road for some time.

So I don’t need to sorn it just when it’s taxed and motd go to the post office for a tax disc? Not that it will be on the road for a while. Just didn’t want to get fined for it not being sorned.

Thanks for the quick replys

Of course the obvious thing is that if the car registered in your name and you haven’t received any nasty letters from the DVLA, I wouldn’t worry about it!!

i would just get dvla to email you confirmation to cover ya ass, but no just pop down the po when ya ready

The car is in my name but I’ve realised it’s still in my old address

you can change address easy enough!
in fact pop a letter in there when you send it asking if you need to declare sorn and how to retax it!

Thanks everyone

As said no need for sorn on a car that was already off the road before sorn came in several years ago. Sorn rules will only apply from the first time it is taxed and back in use.
