Which Gas To Use For Welding A Mini?

I have just got my new sealey supermig150 and nown i need the gas but am not sure which one is best for welding my mini.

Could anyone tell me what is best and maybe a little help with why?

Cheers se

Nice and local too

I can not comment why but as I understand a mix of CO2 and Argon is best. It essentially shields the weld from any oxygen which would cause splatter, horrible welds etc. Although the welder settings will contribute a lot to the weld quality.

CO2 doesn’t maintain an arc as well as Argon Mix. On low voltages (probably the lowest couple of settings on most MIG welders) the wire will tend to ball on top of the surface and not penetrate the metal. The arc doesn’t appear to start until the wire has touched the work, and it extinguishes as the wire burns back resulting in the ‘weld’ being made in a series of pops and spatters. Wire speed setting or technique do not appear to influence the effect. Simply CO2 does not work on low voltage settings.

If you have a lot of welding to do, the most economical deal is the BOC ‘Volkszone’ deal on a Y size cylinder of Argoshield light. There’s a big thread about it on the Mig welding forum.

Co2 with an argon mix is ideal. Co2 on its own will work but will produce more heat & consequently spatter.

I use 5% argon mix, same as argoshield light but rent free bottle.

I been using pub gas co2 and to be honest can’t really see any need to use anything else. Welds look plenty clean and only time really get spatter is of you hit some sealer or something
