Hi
I’m going to put a stereo system in my Mini, consisting of 2 amps, 1 10" sub 4 6.5"'s and 2 tweeters. I know the alternator will need uprating due to the extra power needed, but which are the best ones to fit?

thats high..i thought the highest minis could go to that would fit ok was along the line of 75amp as i remember a thread saying that someone had found a 75amp alternator that would fit.
Its a piece of cake to fit. Bit of uprated cabling and adjustment to the mounting bushes.

hmmm interesting as i may need a new alternator at some point
Paid about £50 for a new-old-stock one off Ebay. At idle I can turn on every electrical item on the car and turn the stereo up full but the voltmeter doesnt drop in the slightest
my stereo will cut out if i turn my spots on but then can rite back on again
my hazards make the car drop a little when at idle..funny how a safety device could do that lol.

Thats due to volt drop… usually a wiring fault (or wiring not up to the job)…not an alternator problem..
How rusty is the fuse box and connections??

don’t have a fuse box my electrics are all running off inline fuses lol
can you not overcharge a batt using a large alt like the 90 amp ?

nope
anyone know of any other alternators that fit on a mini as mine is cream crackered and i need a new one but mini ones are not readily available here i was just wondering if anyone know of any other make of car that fits directly that i might be able to get hold of easier

Its not overly difficult at all to fit. Obviously the pulley will need swapping for a mini one. The alternator output feed needs to be upgraded to handle the extra power. I used 8awg amplifier power cable for this. The mounting bushes will need realigning to make sure that the pulleys all run die-straight. I had to use a longer fan belt too, an 838mm I think it was. Using a slighter longer one say an 845mm would be better though with hindsight as it gives a bit more movement to tension the belt. Other than that, its no more difficult than swapping a standard one.
What alternators are available ? i can find a 45 / 75 amp but is there anything more powerful that will fit strait to a mini with no mods ?
