i went the other night to buy a 1275 engine, i arrived there and i asked the fella what had been done to the engine, he said its a full race engine, its bored out to 1340, its had new pistons, new rings, race cam e.t.c., i heard the engine goin on his garage floor so knew it was good enough…i brought it home and one of my mini club friends called to see it, he looked at the engine and said thats not bored out the engine i.d plate is still on it…??? Is this true?? Or is he talking poo???
You do not have to deck the block by taking a skim cut once you bore an engine. It would certainly be prudent to measure it for flatness and skim cut it if it looks at all necessary.
The engine ID tag can be removed and replaced. I removed and replaced my engine tag as part of its rebuild. If you do NOT remove the engine tag and you have the block “hot tanked” (where it is boiled out in caustic to remove deposits and grunge) the tag will dissolve and disappear.
I think your friend assumed the engine wasn’t rebuilt because the engine tag was there… but that doesn’t mean it is not rebuilt. Permanently removing the engine tag is not required as part of a rebuild.

He’s takling sh!te, do believe another word he says about engines.
The only way to know if it’s been bored is to measure it or look at the marking on the pistons to see if they are oversized; either way you need the head off.
My guess is that this engine is not a ‘full race’ engine. I can’t think of any class where a 1340 would be useful (too big or too small capacity). What is the cam? ‘full race’ sounds like bull sh!t to me. I’d expect a prety fancy head on any race engine too, what has it got?
You may have bought an ok engine, a rebuilt 1340 with a decent cam will be a nice road engine, but ‘full race’? what does that even mean?

Wil I think you meant don’t
Everything else I’d have to agree with… I have met numerous people try to sell a “race” engine that was nothing but a slighlty modified standard engine
In most cases a race engine is to a specific formula, however whilst there is nothing wrong with building a “race” type engine ie 1340 (which is actually 1330) with a race cam, and all the other parts that go into making an engine a race engine, the real biggy would be the cylinder head, if the ports look standard or only slightly modified then that’s all it’s probably going to be…
