So today on the way home from work the heavens opened, a full on, hammering thunder and lightening storm, rain everywhere, really heavy. !
Now ive only owned my Mini a month or so now but imagine my surprise when i felt a drip on my feet and looked down to see water coming through the bottom of the dash
It wasn’t a lot of water but it was enough to make a small puddle on the rubber mats ?!
Is this a common problem and if not where the devil can it be coming from, my car has a very solid body and is a 1999 Cooper Sportspack in case this makes a difference.
Any advice would be great, thanks Philip and a rather wet Reggie.
PS: Im gonna rant now because some little swine decided Reggie would look better without a passenger side wing mirror last night, however kindly left their prize on my bonnet GRRRRRRRRRR
Check all the rubber grommets on the bulkhead in your engine bay are firmly in place aswell.
Also feel and look at the base of your heater for any water, heater matrix may have gone, but unlikely on a 99 car I would have thought! Im guessing this drip only happens when its raining as said??
If its none of that and its coming from the dash area, as said, its the windscreen seal.

Thanks for the advice, I’ve had the heater on plenty and haven’t had any leaks, in fact I’ve drove it in the rain and haven’t suffered any problems, seems the heavy stuff has found its way in though, now I have thought about i suspect it is likely to be the seal on the windscreen as ive noticed a couple of times some strange condensation in on patch near the bottom, anyways im not going to look in this rain
Mine had the same problem mate, it was the seal on the windscreen had split on the bottom, letting water pour in, check it if its bad or split, i would replace it.

This is the first time its happened so Im hoping its not to bad, Ive drove in the rain before and it was fine so im hoping the mass amounts of water is what’s caused it, anyways i will be changing it…Got to work out how first of course
wolverhampton is no better..but when it rains now it rains..had floods all over the place…glad my mini is getting a near rear windscreen seal or else the boot would be like a swimming pool
Bloody huge puddle in the passenger side footwell today !!!
Luckily i have rubber mats down so it just gathered in there, def need to sort this out, im feeling confident its the windscreen seal, when my car leans to the left more water comes through.
same happens on my 98 mpi but i know my windcreen seal needs replacing also the small rust bubbles to so i will get on with this once the storms have passed
My floor on the drivers side is wet also so i think water must be getting in via the bottom too, i made sure not to get the mats wet today when i got in, after driving one part of the floor under the mat was soaking (
The last few MPI’s we’ve seen with leaking front windows have needed a new scuttle (and sometimes the top dash rail)…the later cars are made from poor quality metal and alot of the areas arent painted on the inside.
Replace the seal with a wide one to see if it helps, but be prepared for the worse when the window and seal is out.

Jordie
My scuttle is spotless on the outside, no rust at all, can they rust on the inside so that its not visable ?
Do you know any places in our area that can do this Jordie ?
Ive got a couple of other little bits to do also, normally i would go to Green and Whites but i was unsure if they did body stuff ?
If its welding, green and white will farm it out to one of there contacts. I see your on tynemouth, if you ask on there “miniman” aka ian had his MPI front end replaced recently, but honestly, it nearly failed MOT on the scuttle making the window insecure.
If theres no rust on the outside, whip the glass and seal out and have a look at the lip. All been well it will be fine, drop in a wide type seal and refit the glass.
