Start of my cage

Got the welder out again today and made a start on my cage extras, todays target was to get the rear brace between the 2 rear legs of the cage in for the harnesses to secure to and put the door bars in. It all came together well, just need to treat them to a coat of paint, but there is loads more to come…

Looking good mate

i dont mean to sound stupid but on safety devices cage’s, arnt the feet meant to have 3 holes and be a fair bit larger? Thats how we get passed scrutineering at racing rather than these people who just knock up a crappy bolt in cage

rob

It is an oldish front half, and it had a plate very badly welded on to give it the extra hole, but i cut it off.

Should look smart when it’s all painted up.
Now where’s my welder …

Phil.

Just out of interest, what is the law for MoT’s for seat belt mountings?? As you can see, I’ve got mine on the bar which I have welded in, but would this be MoT legal?

My mates Scooby impreza had his belts like that , and he got MOT ok , if in doubt re-fit the standard belts for MOT

looks very sweet

Looks good, come round and make me one :cheese:

Today I got up early and beat the living hell out of my back seat with a hammer and chisel, then attacked it with the grinder, theres no point in having a back seat if no one can use it. So now the rear seat and pockets have gone and I’ve sprayed the new bits of cage too…

ouch ya fighter, that has made a big difference to the rear.. whats the plan for the rear then? a road going race car?

Rich.

looking tops man

how much weight have you lost?

Not sure on the weight because I dont have any scales…

I’m thinking about hill climbs, but I will have to get the rule book out and see what the regs are for body mods. Failing that, its gonna be as race prepared as the MoT will allow!

I hope one day to get it featured in one of the mags.

Looking the dogs, I wanted to take the rears out in mine too, how numch work was it and how hard?

Cheers
Tucker

It took less than an hour. I started by using a grinder, but I couldnt get in the corners very well, so I used a sharp chisel and roughly cut everything out then tidied it up with the grinder afterwards.

Rich, make sure to have everything strong (should be with that roll cage) since some of the stuff you took out is quite structural!

Also is that rust on the floor where the rear pockets would be? Touch it up with some shiny red paint to go with the rest of the car, then it’ll look top notch!

Definitely a magazine feature car as a road-going racer!

Yeah I discoverred a hole in the rear drivers side corner about the size of a 10p peice , but its no big deal, I’ll cut it out and weld a new bit in, the rest of it is dirt over its original brown colour…

Looking nice mate. Just realised why there are four aluminium plates on the sills of my car with bolts coming through, must have had a cage at some point. Someone did the same to my rear bins but I’m going back standard so am gonna have to weld the bins back into it, now that is gonna be a fun job!!
Keep up the good work mate…

That really is gonna be the dogs when it is done

Scooby should’ve failed MOT because it requires E-marked inertia reels.
Older Minis should be OK because I don’t think the rules apply to old knackers. Don’t know what year inertias were made leagal requirement though.

In all other cases just be friendly to your MOT man.
I,ve got clear rear clusters, harnesses, air horns and an emissions test to worry about.
But I’ve got a local Guy who loves minis so should be OK.
