Spotlight Problem

i got some italian job spotlights for my mini from huddersfield. i fitted them and wired them up as the instructions said, but they dont actually work.

i earthed the spotlights on the bolt which fastens the spolight bar on..so could this be it or am i missing something

also their are to wires on the spotlights a black one and a white one so im guessin the blacks live and whites neutral?

Normally other way round on cars, White positive, black negative.

Earthing through the bolt should be fine.

Would need more info on how you’ve wired them.

Have you used a relay and taken a feed from the high beam circuit to switch the relay on and off ??

ive used a wiring kit from hudds.

got a live back to battery with 15amp fuse.

earth to relay

wire from switch to relay.

earth to switch.

spotlights to relay.

and earth to spotlights.

if that helps

Check you have the wires to the relay right

4 pin relay

pins 85 and 86 are the ones that energise the relay, as long as you have an earth on one and the live switch feed on the other thats ok

87 and 30 are the power in and out. your fusedsupply goes on one, the positive to the spots goes on the other.

Hang on just read you’ve run an earth to switch ?? sounds odd that bit.

> earth to relay

**earth to switch**.

If you’ve wired it like that, thats your problem, you’ve no live feed going to the relay to energise it. You don’t want an earth to the switch you want a live feed, this live feed should come from the high beam circuit if done correctly

Also legally spots should only come on with the high beam, so they should be taking a feed of the main beam circuit

ye that relay pictures the same as ive followed… so shud the switch not have an earth

I did edit my last reply but

**earth to switch**.

It should be earth to relay on pin 85

then pin 86 goes to your switch

then you need a 12v feed going to the switch not an earth.

The 12v feed for the switch should come off your high beam circuit live wires

im well confused their nothing about goin to the high beam but ill give it ago

would i link to it at the headlight end or the fuse board end

I’m 99% certain spots should only come on when you turn on your high beam. So for that to happen you need to wire it so the relay can only be live when the high beam is on.

The high beam circuit is the Blue/white wires, so just find that and splice into it

thanks very very much for the help … shame the weather has turned so il have to do it another day

why take the supply from the battery when you could of taken the power from the starter solenoid

just seems like an area for problems in the future
