Spluttering In 1st And 3rd

Hi all,

I had my timing looked at by a garage last week. It was 34% out so with a timing light he sorted it out. But whilst he was sorting it out he said that my dizzy needed turning around (as in 90%).. I thought this was odd as the dizzy had not been moved and timing was ok untill i messed with the vaccuum advance a couple of days before. Anyway, he had to change all of the leads around in order for them to reach with the new possition of the dizzy. Now however i am spluttering in 1st and 3rd. and power is very slow to come and then comes in huge chunks. Could it be that the leads are in the wrong positions now??

And help would be appreciated

Thank You

Normally as a ballpark if everything is fitted correctly.. The pipe for the vacuum is normally facing upwards.

As you look at the dizzy

No 1 lead is at a 2 oclock position

Then going anticlockwise, you will have No 3 , No 4 and No 2

No 1 spark is one on right of engine as you look at it.

It wouldn’t run at all if the leads were wrong. Position of dizzy dosn’t matter a hoot - waste of time changing it round. Sounds like your timing has been upset - advance it till it ‘pinks’ - then take it back very slightly until there is ‘just’ NO pinking.

The pipe for the vaccum was facing straight up but is now facing 90% right (3 o’clock possition)
I will have a look at the leads when i get a chance, although im guessing they are not in the same order since they were played with at the garage

Just to clarify IroStoke.. On the head the very right spark as you look at it is no1, then 2, 3 and 4 as you run to the left?

And on the dizzy.. no1 lead should be at 2 o’clock, then 3, 4 and 2 running anti-clockwise

Don’t worry about the position - do make sure the vac pipe is connected.

Sorry to sound stupid but the only “pinking” i know is in the bedroom
I didnt think it should run if the leads were wrong but wanted to make sure.
Timing was fixed though a week ago and it was almost straight away that problem sorted. do you think he didnt sort the timing correctly?

To answer the first question for future reference, yes No 1 is far right, then working left 2 , 3 ,4

But like said if its running then doubtful on in wrong order, but if timing was messed with sounds like the mechanic hadn’t got a clue, especially considering he move’d the dizzy round 90 degrees for no reason
Suprised the vac unit isn’t snagging on the oil feed pipe if he’s turned it that far

Mechanic has been at it for years and years and years so should know what he is doing. Although depending on who you ask you will get different answers to that to be honest.
