Spi Ballast Coil + Aldon Ignitor Pack

Hi there, my car’s a 1990 Mini Mayfair II, with 1275 SPi converted to carb + 59D dizzy. I’ve just bought a ballast coil for SPi from Minispares (item GCL211) (Link Here). as my current coil is the Lucas non-ballast type while the car should have the ballast-type coil. I’ve also bought the Aldon Ignitor pack also from Minispares (LU144) and on it says it should not be used with the electronic ignition coil (the one that I’ve just bought, apparently)

So, my question is: is it possible to use the two items together, or am I better go with fitting my old, non-ballasted coil but with a direct 12v feed taken from the fusebox (not using the pink/white resistive ballast wire)?

Any answer will be greatly appreciated…

Many thanks,

Aria

Given what you have got the best thing to do is indeed to run a 12v feed, remove the ballasted system and use the non ballasted coil. The coil you have bought is an aftermarket version of the electronic type coil and the Ignitor 1 pack is specifically designed for use with points type coils.

All depends on what distributor you are now using. It wont matter what any documantation says about your car as it is no longer what it left the factory as. An SPi car should have the ballast coil. An electronic distributor fitted car should also use the ballast coil.

What disributor is on the car? that will determine which coil. Is the 59D dizzy an electronic one? im not sure as i cant remember the last time I saw one

Thank you Dan for the quick reply… I will go along your advice and take a new 12v feed to the coil, then…

thanks so much for the info…

Sprocket, the dizzy is the 59D sliding points type… (I know that the advance curve will be out for my engine though…) so it will not be an electronic ignition, is it?

Sorry, the ignitor is the Pertronix Ignitor, and not the Aldon ones if it makes any difference…

Pertronix and Aldon sell the same module that Pertronix designed. Over here we only really know it under the Aldon name but they are the same thing.

The 59D is as you say just the sliding contact version of the 45D, sometimes called the blue heel points version. The electronic dizzy is the 65DM.
