how do you take the speedo cable out of a austin mini mayfair engine cheers miniallsort
Unscrew it. If it’s seized you can remove the screw holding the fitting to the gearbox casing and work on seperating the cable on the bench.
you also need long skinny arms and good finger strength ![]()
Don’t forget that along with the skinny arms/fingers you need the patience of Job.
does any no another to get to it its in a really hard area and i cant get to it ???
have you tried jaking the car up, not fogettig to put it on axle stands and trying from underneath?
or you might have to remove the inlet and exhaust manifolds for easier access
i found that it ws easier with the radiator out! you can get at it from the side then!
yep i have tryed that all readdy
do you have any small children that could do it for you ? :erm:
i dont no what i am going to do
you might need pliers or mole grips to get it started
Radiator out gives the most access. If you just take the bolts out of the top and bottom of the rad then you can push it to one side by a couple of inches without removing the hoses and draining the system (unless you have a later car with lot’s of junk around the rad!)
I’ve used a tap wrench in the past which can help just un-nip a speed cable… but for stubborn b’s, it’s arad out and then you have all the room you need…
On Mk1 cars with the two piece radiator shroud taking the radiator out is more work than you would believe. On my Mk1, I found it easier to “split” the inner drive joint (these are cup mounted u-joints… not the pot joints most of you have). Then you can swing the driveshaft out of the way and there is much better access.
Failing that, your best bet is to use a 7/16" (AF) [11mm] spanner and remove the single bolt holding the cable drive bracket to the gearbox. It’s not impossible to get that bolt out with everything else installed. As mentioned above, once you get that single bolt out you can take the cable and mounting flange to the bench to separate them.
