Speed Camera Vans....

i was out for a drive yesterday and went past one of those bloody speed camera vans. i couldnt be sure if i was speeding or not, if i was, i certainly wasnt much over the limmit.

anyway, there is no numberplate on the front of my car, as i forgot to fit it the other day after working on the front bumper, silly me!

so if i was speeding, are they likely to pick me up for it? as far as i am aware there is no forward facing camera in these vans, only the one hanging out the rear doors.

do they pick up speeding motorbikes without a front number plate?

They have a foward facing camera too, so if you were speeding you would of been snapped i’m afraid.

Thery’re a proper pain in the arse… and they park in the most stupid places. A few days before MITP there was one parked on a grass verge by a roundabout so you couldn’t see if there was anything coming

Not to mention that nervous wait you have to see if that letter comes through your post box

They do have a front facing camera but it isnt very powerful, unlike the one at the back. Unfortunatley you’ll have to wait and see if you have a ticket, the front facing camera may have picked up your rear no.plate. :/.
by the way is there signs out saying that theres speed cameras on that road? Someone told me that you can contest the ticket if theres no clear warning of a camera in the area.

Check where the van was parked. If they were parked on a grass verge or obstructing a public walkway without leaving enough safe access for pedestrians and wheelchair users, it is illegal and the ticket can be contested. They can’t break one law to enforce another.

Q22 - Unnecessary obstruction.

You can also ask for proof of two documents. The first one is the operator’s certificate and the second is the speed camera calibration certificate. If they fail to produce these then you’re off the hook.

ill just have to wait and see i guess.

the camera is in a little country village in the middle of nowhere, right next to another little village where i got my last 3 points!

ill check if it is blocking anything but i doubt it is, sadly there are warning signs up everywhere aong that particular road so i cant say i wasnt aware of the possibility of it being there.

they are sneaky buggers, in the real world, its pretty hard to keep a clean licence these days, 36 in a 30 and your done, its no speed at all is it really, never mind.

there nearly as annoying as community speed watch like stated above they have a forward facing camera aswell but i’m guessing that its unlikely they caught your plate you’ll just have to sit and wait unfortunately

Advance warning signs are not necessary to make these ‘Talivans’ legal. You would probably do more harm than good if you start asking for calibration certificates, etc., and doing that may preclude your being offered a ‘speed awareness course’. Speed awareness courses are normally oofered ifn you are under about 40 in a 30 and you don’t get any points or have to tell your insurer.
If you think you’ve been unfairly done, go to a web site called ‘Pepipoo’ for more information.

I had a copper jump out in the road and put the speed gun on me the other day, as soon as i saw his flourescent jacket, i hit the brakes, hard, lol, still pulled me in to have a winge at me, and that he couldnt get a speed reading on me, which was due to me breaking heavily just as he got the gun on me

If you were speeding you deserve the penalty… Tough titties

I don’t see why they would go harder on you for asking for information you are entitled to, it’d be contrary to the basic principals of our law. It’d be interesting to look into though. The motorbike thingy is also interesting, perhaps they have a forward facing camera as well for snapping their registrations. I guess the ability to deploy “Talivans” ( Cooperman) without warning signs is a large part of the appeal.

Yeah too right!!!..

In fact you can come and sit next to me and endure the four hours of speed awareness training that I’m going to have to sit through in a couple of weeks time too!!

i went on a speed awareness course about 18 months ago now, its pretty pointless really, as it obviously didnt work.

Definite points if you did get caught then I’m afraid matey. I believe you can only do one every 3 years. I took the course a while ago, although I don’t like admitting it. It is pretty pointless, but it worked for me cause now I’m paranoid about getting points, knowing that I won’t get the easy way out and get stung by insurance next year! It is far too easy to accumulate points these days IMO. I’m always worrying about what’s behind me or where the next speed gun’s gonna be lol.

The fools who support these Talivans seem to think that road safety can be achieved from ‘driving by numbers’. Not ‘driving by skill’, or driving by care’, but just by numbers.
The entire ‘cash-camera’ programme is totally flawed in terms of improving road safety.

In northamptonshire where the ‘safety camera team’ has been shelved. the police now operate the vans..
no need to display speed camera signs.

I didn’t actually get caught by a speed camera van, I did some thing significantly more stupid.

I actually got caught by a static camera that I knew to be there because it was in a nearby village that I drove through twice a day for many years. As I approached, I noticed that the camera had be spun around and for once was actually facing so to catch cars as they were leaving the **30 **mph zone instead of entering it. “Now that’s a bit devious of them” I thought to myself as I checked my speedo to make sure that I was doing just under **40 **mph… and FLASH!!!

I was caught speeding many a time when I was younger, at one point I lost my licence due to having 16 points on it. Someone told me to watch this video and it really shocked me.

Please watch it and post a comment after.
