Something I heard on the news.....

Heard the news yesterday and from what I could gather, it will now be complusory to carry a fire extinguisher in your car for France and Germany as from 1st August 2005.

Does anyone now anything else about this - something else to add to the list to take if so???

Yeah I heard that, prob a good idea when going around the nurburgring anyway IMO

thought it already was! had one in the car for the IMM trip!

Always got one under my seat

You can get the little portable fire extinguishers from most parts retailers etc.

I’ve got one sitting against the seat subframe next to the handbreak for easy access.

Some of these new spare parts rules are becoming a major pain - but make excellent sense in most cases:

Depending where you’re driving through, you now at least need:

  1. Euro light adjusters for your headlights;

  2. Safety tri-angle (x 2 in Spain)

  3. Spare bulbs for all lights

  4. Fluro emergency jacket (Check out Icu-ucme who I bought my jacket off)

  5. Medical kit

  6. Spare pair of spectacles (if you wear them to drive) (new Spanish requirement).

Have I missed anything?

Yeh the Kitchen Sink by the sounds of it !

The Spec requirement for Spain is at least 9 years old!!

& spare bulb set.I would suggest a hi-vis jacket as well.
Compulsory on Spanish M.W’s but also advised on French ones, dunno the legal spec for Germany, but always best to be seen if needed !
Fire extinguishers, erm I’d say yup, had one for T2T 2003 and IMM run.
Best to check on the continental travelling info site really.

i’ll be having the fire extinguisher anyway :fear:

At the moment this states that Fire Extinguishers are recommended and not compulsory - it might be that they will update their website on or just before 1st August. Might be an idea to keep checking on the link above.

in germany the adac (equivalent to the aa and rac) doesn’t know anything about these plans…

I have just contact the AA through their web site for up to date information about this. I attempted phoning them but it was just pre-recorded messages and advising to look at their web site.

Should have an answer within 48 hours.

when we went over to france, we had to buy a fire extinguisher (£15) and first aid kit (£14) GB sticker (£3) and safety jacket (£6) as it said they were compulsary when driving in france and germany… the warning triangle, spare bulbs etc we already had (this is for my dads car, although ill be using some of the stuff for the trip)

Aside from the regulations and wanting to avoid fines, I suggest all the safety stuff will be very advisable to have for the fact we’ll be driving around the 'Ring.

It’s apparently not a place for the faint-hearted, and having a safety triangle and hi-viz jacket could come in real handy if you happen to be broken down (or hopefully for none of us, crashed) on the 'Ring.

I don’t believe there’s much space on the side of the track to pull over safely, so letting other drivers & bikers coming up behind you at over 140mph know that you’re stopped up ahead could be a good thing…

Reply received back from the AA dated 28th July. However, I did enquire about Belgium and Germany and there is no mention in their reply, only France!

The AA International Motoring Services department have checked with the
French Authorities and they are not compulsory at this time and only
recommended. They have checked on this recently as there have been quite a
few similar queries.

If however you decided to get one any way they are available at motor spares
shops.

Further reply from the AA as at 30th July.

The same rule applies to both Germany and Belgium, that it is not compulsory
to carry a fire extinguisher but is recommended.

Thats why i always travel with a full bladder!!

" Sorry for my humour!! im still laughing at my own jokes!! " i know i know its very painful sometimes!! :fear:
