Should I Go For Twins?

so ive been eyeing up a set of twin 1.5" SU carbs on ebay, but i dont know how suited they will be to my engine.

i know there are quite a few threads on this already, but i couldnt find a straight answer.

my setup is a 1275 with metro cam, skimmed 940 head, 3-1 manifold and straight through exhaust. i dont want to end up strangling my engine, so what do we recon? wise move?

cheers guys

I would not.

I would not.

fair enough. how come?

Difficult to setup (well, more difficult than one!) and for virtually no performance increase.

After all, there is only 1 piston sucking at any one time.

(Standing back now to let the “experts” lambaste me)…

Your engine and cylinder head does not ‘breathe’ enough to justify the use of twin 1 1/2 carbs, its as simple as that.

ok think ill stick with a single carb setup then, cheers guys

im dissapointed and let down by the thread title :frowning:

they will look good and there not that hard to set up…I had a set on my old 1100 engine and that had a 731cam and lcb…stage 3 head it went well

Not hard to set up, but a single is better unless you get a state of the art inlet manifold.

you’ve lost me  :shy: we cant all go turbo!

Take the money you would spend on them and put it into your current set up and you would see improvements.

Fitting twins would not see any improvement.

There is only one set of twins I would now fit to a Mini and that is a paid of split 45s. But you would need a way better engine.

The problem with Twin SUs is this. They look great. But they don’t work any better in the form that most people fit them.

And even then when sorted they only give marginal improvements over a well sorted and sized single.

Like I said I would not. Been there do that spent more sold them on.

ok sounds logical, cheers mate. ill stick with my trusty HIF then!

Fit a 28/36 weber, I loved mine so much, the sound was only second to turbo flutter haha

Not as good as people say. A single SU on manifold will sill out flow a 28/36 on manifold.

Used one of them as well. Not for long and I had to trash a bonnet for it as well.

Don’t care about that, mine still made 64bhp out of a 998cc, and fitted under my bonnet without any mods, didn’t fit it for the power gains only the sound mmmmmm

I think you’re missing part of the appeal of twin carbs. If you have to ask people’s opinion you’re doing it wrong  I think you should want to fit them despite sensible reason telling you otherwise!

I’ve got a set of Cooper S twin HS2’s for the 1098 engine I’m doing. It would have been much more sensible to get a single 1.75" SU, but I really wanted twin carbs…

I love my twins ( i have a few carbs now)

They look good and set up well they perform great with vizard mods. Ignore the negativity blah blah blah!
