Rechargeable Battery Charger?

Hi,

Our garage is a separate block from our flat, and doesn’t have power other than an overhead light. Has anyone found a decent rechargeable battery charger? Does such a thing exist? Or are they all just for jump starting a car?

Whenever we’ve had a flat battery in our minis I’ve had to take it our the car, lug it up to the 5th floor to charge it, lug it backdown and re-install it. Its not the end of the world I know, but after 10 years o living here its getting a bit old! :)

Would something like this work? http://www.halfords.com/motoring/bulbs-blades-batteries/car-battery-chargers/sealey-rs132-roadstart-emergency-power-pack-with-air-compressor-12v-900-peak-amps

Its a 1999 MPI if that makes a difference.

Got the mini back from some body work restoration after its been off the road for a few years so you’ll probably be seeming more of me on the forum

they are just portable power packs to get you started.

what is the light fitting?

Must be some sort of power for the light - can you not tap into that…

Would you want something to recharge the recharger that recharges the rechargeable car battery?

The light is just a bayonet fitting - the whole garage block is on a timer though so I can’t guarantee having power when I need it. I’ve picked up a rechargeable LED lamp so I can have light when I want (http://www.screwfix.com/p/ae0183-rechargeable-led-work-light-10w-12-240v/1815d) - its great

 Yes. That would be perfect

Guess I’ll keep doing what I’m doing then - I was just being lazy  Might see if I can rig up some straps to lift the battery out - its currently got a battery without a handle on top and its a pita to get out.

Cheers for all the answers.

I would also see what is causing the drain on the battery.

Or disconnect it,

A small float charger like a CTEK would easily run off the lighting circuit as its current draw is minimal.  If permanently connected to the garaged car it would top up the charge as and when the lighting circuit was on.  http://www.ctek.com/gb/en/chargers/car

You used to be able to get wireable plugs for bayonet light fitting (usually for Christmas tree lights).

As Nick says though, you need to find what’s flattening the battery or (if you don’t need an alarm active) simply disconnect the battery when the cars not in use.  One of those Dis-car-nect things without the fuse in would make it easy. http://www.richbrook.co.uk/dis-car-nect-battery-master-switch/disc-car-nect-battery-cut-off-switch90

One of my old minis is in a lock up with no power. I use a power pack (I think like the one you have linked, although the link isn’t working) and charge it up at home before I go to the lockup.
I simply connect it on and leave it for 20 minutes or so and then start up the car.
When I put the car away I disconnect the earth strap. Since my power pack has a light on it it helps when as like this time of year it’s dark putting her away.
I have something like this that I bought from Costco a few years ago http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sealey-RS131-900A-Emergency-Power/dp/9801434716

I have two of these - chocolate fire guard comes to mind. Never charged anything enough to make a difference.

The reviews don’t agree…however I would go for one of these…10 times the output

What has always annoyed me about those power packs is how come non of them can be used as a battery charger!. They must have the components in them to charge the in built battery, so why don’t they have a switch on it to enable you to plug it in and connect it to your car battery and charge? So instead you end up having to have both a battery charger and a power pack.

Or have I just not looked in the right places?  :shy:

Depending on what the Light fitting is, one of these may plug in to it after removing the lamp

It would be perfectly safe to use if the Battery Charger is double insulated, don’t use it with a metal enclosed unit.

I wonder if you could connect an inverter to a jump start pack, and plug a battery charger into it?

One of my friends had one of the jump start packs and used it like a charger. It doesn’t know the car battery is connected, and charges them as one unit.

Battery out of car - connected to jump pack - connected to wall socket

The manual you get with the jump pack tells you not to do that though!
