Quickshifts

i fitted my new KAD quickshift today, and it is unbelievably hard to change from 2nd to 3rd and vice versa, does anyone else have this problem, i can appreciate that it needs time to loosen up but i was just a bit surprised

its a quick shift, i personally dont like them on road cars becaus it kills the gearbox

is it a mk1 or mk2 quick shift?

its a mk2 quickshift, will that make any difference?

ive got a quick shift on my mini. Ive also got a competition clutch which has a very short bite travel.

Trust me, you will get used to it. and then you will love it!

cool thanks i already love the changes from 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th, just hoping the rest will loosen up a bit

what clutch do u have in yours then?

Are you sure it kills the gearbox ? and not the driver ?? Its all about ratios and you have just moved the fulcrum point making it harder to move the “stick” but it is only due the internal frictional forces within the gearbox !

Cheers

sorry if this sounds thick but is there anyway to lessen the the frictional forces?

There are ways, however it’s all a compromise Austin, Morris, Leyland, BMC, Rover etc designed and built these units for durability and mileage, so to build a box to change easier does to a certain extent mean that its life will be slightly less, and it will need more oil changes (not a bad idea)

But most important of all is build it carefully, very carefully and KEEP it CLEAN

MRA,

I’m with you. I can’t see how a quick shift would damage the gearbox. All you have changed is the pivot point which means less travel but also less leverage. There should be no change in the forces at the gearbox end.

I think what you have to realise is that a quick shift only reduces the travel of the stick shift, I don’t actually think it speeds up the change, and in fact his is the problem half the time, people are trying to change gear quicker, and slamming the gears thus wearing the baulks and dog prematurely.. hence kills the box..

As normal it’s not the mechanical device but the user

Guessworks is correct.

All a Quick shift does is reduce the travel of the actual gearstick, Because it is traveling less, There is less lever-age on the gearstick making it harder to change gear.

2 -> 3 is a very difficult change though with a quickshift. But it does get easier over time.

helps if your clutch is spot on.

hmmm, drove the car to the show at Malvern today, and after looking at other quickshifts i have decided mine is definatly not right, it is almost as though the rods are catching on each other because sometimes no matter what you do it will not go in from 2nd-3rd and 3rd-2nd, so it will be going to Somerford Minis tomorrow
