Powered Bicycles

Has anybody ever built a engined powered push bike? was thinking of making one soon as a little project for me to learnt o weld and stuff and just wanted some ideas

There was one at this years retro rides gathering

It was surprisingly fast around the track
I pretty sure this is his build thread, but I have only read the first page so may be wrong.. Click

yeah i was just reading that one funnily enough thats whats given me the insperation to do something like it, except i want to do a trike or something

Common fitting up until the early 60s. You bought a kit that fitted to your ordinary pushbike. It contained a small IC engine and gearbox and simply drove the standard bike wheel through the tyre. The registration plate was fitted to the engine along with the tax disc, it was the engine that the reg and tax disc applied to, not the bike. Knew someone who had 2 and was considering trying to transfer the numbers, but at that time, DVLA would not allow it. Not even sure if it would be legal now.

I do remember reading about the 60s bikes above.
The bike shown is a good design. As we all know with petrol engines like Mini-Motos NO WAY on the road.Shame i would have loved one when young.Had a mini Scooter that was fun.
For a prodject i would build an Electric bike you can use that. Some of those Scooters shift and could be used for parts.
If you only want to build a petrol bike or trike you need to get the right engine for the build.A rear wheel drive bike could be built with a chain saw engine.A low life span but fun.A mini -moto engine for a bike trike.

Dont you guys have kits like this in the UK?

I was thinking more of something for fun, just to like ride round at shows and stuff and down the lane i have near my house.

Think i need to go get a lawnmower fromt he local scrappy, a bike for parts and my little brothers trike scooter thing

Should be fun doing it

Would be good nick, ill give you and hand doing it as well. would you convert the mower engine to drive the chain from where the blade spins from yer? as ive got a chain delinker and could russle you up one…

yeah basicly id run the chain directly from the sprocket at the end of the crank to a sprocket welded to an axle. Need to try get hold of: A mower, A bike, some sort of base vehicle, some hydraulic disc brakes x2 (weld either side of the rear sprocket) and little bits here and there

you can have my ally bmx frame when i strip it?

On talk of mower engines. On the old petrol ones they tend to have a chain drive the wheel (to power it forward) and a belt driving the mower part. It’d be better to thus run it off the chain to the wheels (because it has the sprockets etc) but you’d want a massive one for the front and you’ll need to find a new chain sprocket (or two) that match to fit a chain around.

I hope i’m making sense. So either you go with a belt and pulley (And suffer slipping or just not going anywhere!) or go with a chain drive but have to find sprockets and chains that fit.

Thats exactly what i was imagining!

Yeah i was planning on using the chain drive. As for the sprocket, surely i could just use like a motorcycle/scooter one?

click try this

Do you need a licence for that tho? Looks a super kit tho and would love to buy one maybe in the near future

Was thinking of making a little toy tho for me to have some fun

*hurries off to ebay to search for a donor mini moto and kiddies pedal go cart *

I’ve built a petrol powered bicycle using a midi moto 49cc 2 stroke engine. I built it a couple of years ago and did a top speed run clocked by a car. It achieved 42mph in 1st gear of the standard 18 speed bike gearing setup. It was really windy so could have gone faster, this was obviously not on normal roads, although i have riden it around my village

that must have been epicly scarey. Ah a good idea ive just had, next mitp a couple of people should build one and then race them down the strip, either 1/4 mile or the 1/8 mile

The Lawn mower Engine is a good idea. The gearing will be hard for any top end.As posted above you will need to fit a large sprocket on the front.Could weld one on.Make a guard to for your legs.

m now thinking of getting one of them kiddie pedal go kart things, and extend the chassis abit and mount the engine behind it with the fuel tank infront of the seat

so…when you gonna build this ?

Thought all your money was going into your van build nick?
