Ive been given a tow hitch for a mini saloon but not sure whether it is legal to fit and use? Does any-body have any ideas? Thank you

In the middle of buying another mini at the moment but the guy who gave it to me said that he didnt want it so gave it to me!!!
Its made from box section with a bend in the middle and a plate at one end which bolts to the boot floor and a bit of angle at the other end which bolts to rear of the subframe!!
I think it came off a 1990 sprite
With Bungle, it depends on age. Don’t forget your insurance is unlikely to cover towing a trailer unless you asked for it.
Well iv seen a few and they all look the same! (fitted in the same places) Yes will be declaring it on my insurance
It may well fit any Mini but I don’t think you can legally tow with Minis made after a certain date. There may well be info on your V5 or that sticker jobbie on the door frame.
you cant tow with mpi minis, basically those made after 1996 as they weren’t approved to tow. although theres no law against fitting a towbar to a late car, and i dont think anyone has been done for towing a trailer with a late mini, the insurance probably wouldnt pay out if you crashed it with a trailer on though.
I’m pretty sure the cut-off date is some time in 1998 - it’s when a European-wide law came in about type approval being needed both for the towbar and tow car. Rover didn’t want to pay the fee for type approval as they knew the Mini only had a couple of years left.

The BBC2 programme on the history of the Caravan last week, featured a Mini Clubman saloon safely towing a Caravan all round Europe in the 1970’s as an advertising promotion for Sprite Caravans…
I have on fitted to my Mayfair… Never used it although it restricts me from adding a DTM or centre exhaust box

Anyone tow something with theirs? I was thinking about creating a Mini Trailer, but too many projects and no time

tow great my mini has a 1275 and and the weight of the teardrop is only about 200kg so no problems
