How much should i be looking at for a decent mini?
Im 15 now as some of you know, and plan on saving up in advance. I just want something like a 998cc, pretty standard.
Id love a cooper but lets be serious. Ill have a cooper lookalike!
Preferably red or dark blue, bonnet stripes, defo white roof andf the four fogs!
I just wondered how much i should be targeting to save up.
2nd Question
I took an insurance quote, on a mayfair i think, with my dad as the main driver which came up to just a tad over £800
17 years of age, provisional. Is that right? I know insurance is alot, but come on, group 1!

Yea i’m afraid that sounds about right, my first year of insurance(17yrs provisional) under my mums name was £850 on a 1.3 metro.
My second year on a 998 mayfair was still £620, thats with 1yrs no claims bonus!!!
But then dropped to £340! That was a couple of weeks ago!
Im paying £420 on a 1989 mini mayfair no years no claims 3 points.
Pass Plus cert, and i’m only 20. should be dropping soon
I thought that to get NCB you had to be the Main driver and NOT a named driver?
If so how did you (jimbo_edmondo) get 1yrs NCB with your mum as the main driver (if this is true)? or have i miss read something?
im with ya on that one ed4ran! you do have to be on ur own insurance, ie the main driver! I’ve just renewed my insurance for the third time, the first yr i was a named driver under my mums insurance and last yr i was own my own insurance for £660. This yr its gone done to £345 with 1 yrs no claims! which i dint think was bad! and it worked out that i only had 1 yrs ncb as for the first yr i was only a named driver
Im paying £1300 for 1982 austin mini city e. Main reason for high price is the alloys and straight thru powerflow exhaust. next best price was over £1800. and if i wanted to add a roll cage that would put it over 2g
well, i would take my advise, i got mine for my 15th B’day prezzie they got it me because they didnt want me to get a motor bike! the more u spend on a car the beter it is and the les ule have to spend on it, but the cheaper it is the more ule have to spend on it. i would stick to a 998, and dont get to fancey would do more than a stage one kit! jsut make it look fast, thats what i did to mine!
mines a mayfair by the way
as for insurance i would goon your own policy because when you go onto your own one theyle slaughter you any way.
heres my msn addy u can tlk to me abotu it when ever u want
> I’ve just got a quote for my yamaha R1 engined RWD Mini Minus (fibreglass bodyshell) fully comp with protected no claims and legal aid £335!
Some of the advantages of being a bit older I suppose.
:nugget: &*%& bugger lol
as miniman said get it under your own name, in the long run it works out alot more efficient
i payed £778 under my own name third party fire and theft, seems expensive but so much cheaper than a 1.1 festa
find a mini which seems in reasonable condition, dont get conned into anything and if it needs some work you have plenty time to sort them out, as miniman has done save all your money, get a haynes manual and get stuck in and make it look as nice as you can possibly afford until you start driving.
check out minimans (toms) project a great example of what can be done linkclick!
cheers lewis, this is freaky, he is called tom and so am i our perants both drive mg zr’s and we are born in the same month! and are both mini nuts! scary! but from now on he is known as ‘mate’ not tom because thats my name! i got it first because im a year older than him!
dont be picky tom…mate…miniman lol i think il call you by your usernames
that is strange and he sounds like you he has a practical and down to earth look on what to do to a mini, unlike some which want ferrari engines in a mini as there first car etc
how much have you got for a mini tjenkos, it depends what condition your after, anything under 300 or so will need some work doing, i payed 300 for mine and it needed new tyres, tie bar, number plate, floor wells and a new door, and i was told it was fine, you can tell alot about the car if just by checking fiitings etc.
Put it this way i only found out my car had a front impact once i took it home and noticed the bonnet off centre and the tie bar with a slight bend, the owner can hide the problems but the car doesnt lie, most of the time… :fear:
TJenkos, back to the original question, never min insurance, without a mini it does not realy matter..
If you have space, get one now as they wont be getting any cheaper, and if you can find a project one all the better cause at least when it breaks down, which it will, you’ll have a good idea on how to fix it… Plus when you do get to drive it in a couple of years, it’ll make you think twice about razzing it around the place as you will know the amount of work which went into it, thus probably saving you them emarassing points which teeangers tend to get, I know, I was one of them once…
You should be able to pick up a project for a couple of hundred, a little more if you want to avoid the welding bit, but sometimes you can get lucky ( I have twice ) and picked up minis for less than 50 notes.
look around you local area for minis parked on driveways etc which look a little lost. they may be abandoned projects !
Not necessarily, they probably only seem more reliable, bucause when you get them they have not reached that end of life point yet, also there’s more of them around, A series 1300 motors are going to be at least 25 years old now, if not older, I know the one I’m using for the 1330 is a late 60’s out of a Austin 1300GT, just wish I could prove it then it would not have to go through the emissions..
TJenkos, depends if you want to do one up or get one now and swan around being chaufered by dad. We got Sams 998 mayfair Cooper look a like, minilight alloys, stage one fitted, mechanically and body work very sound 6 months tax and MOT, buckets and a few internal improovments for 1300, but as GuessWorks says you can get a fixer upper for a lot less.
As for insurance I have looked around on the web based companys and the best I have got by maiking him just over 17 on a provisional is £998 from directline. I think the most I got quoted was about £1800 . Definiately go for your own as trying to get mum or dad to insure it with you as a named driver won’t actually be that much cheeper as if they already have insurance of their own they will have to start at no NCB on the mini. I had quotes that were 1k plus with me insuring it and Sam as named driver. The best advice I can give is shop around and play one company off against the other.
Hope this helps and enjoy your mini when you finally get it.
Be careful with the supermarket car insurance policies, make sure you read the small print carefully. For example I have been told by an insurance agent that if you take out Social, Dompestic and Pleasure plus commuting from Tesco you are only covered for one return journey to your place of work per day, ie if you go home for lunch you will not be covered for the afternoon trip to and from work. As I said I have not read that my self but the person who told me is a family friend and I have no reason to suspect he was wrong.
