Mini Flywheel Puller Wanted (in Sussex)

Mini flywheel puller wanted to suit 1996 Spi. Anyone out there got one we could borrow or happy to buy if the price is right. We’re based near Worthing in Sussex and ideally need it tomorrow! Many thanks Matt.

halfords sell these, its where i got mine from anyhows

Hi Mate,

Thanks for the advice. We just popped down the Halfords and got one. That said, we’ve just borken it (sheared centre bolt) trying to free the flywheel. It’s stuck on good and proper!!!

be a tight flywheel then the bolt iirc is m16, get a new bolt, make sure you have removed keywasher, do up tight then spray a tin of freezing spray on the puller and flywheel and it should pop off.

Just as a pointless comment to be honest, but it is possible to remove the flywheel with the key washer left in place (certainly on a verto ). I just kept tightening it and it popped off. Did take a bit longer than usual though

By the way: i DO NOT recommend doing that as a key washer is about £20

Just had another go (with new bolt) and used WD40, HEAT GUN and a sizeable BAR. Sheared again!!!

wd40 and heat gun dont do same as rust and release freezing spray, thankfully i have a snapon puller and the tread is finer than the pullers you buy today

Once you have fitted another bolt (!!) check that you have the “pulling” bolts in level and the same number of turns. You may not be pulling straight. Get it tight and then leave it overnight with some padding against the inner wing if it is still in the car, or some padding on the floor to catch it if not. You never know- it may pop off.

I also wrote off a puller doing this job a few weeks ago!

It always pays to ask the obvious questions, just in case…

You have removed the key washer haven’t you?

You do have the flywheel the right way up don’t you?

We’re new to Mini’s so basic questions are always welcome!

We’ve removed the keyplate (keywasher) but not sure what you mean about having the flywheel the right way up. In the Haynes manual it doesn’t say anything about positioning the flywheel but it’s quite possible we’ve missed it!

The car is a 1996 Mini Sprite Spi.

Cheers

Matt

Dave,

Sorry to sound so dim but what’s freezing spray and where can we get it from?

Many thanks

Matt

freezing spray, the best is wurth rustoff ice but is not sold on the high street, next best locktite freeze and release, and halfords own last and cheapest

what this will do is contract the bolts etc appling more presure one center bolt of puller is ft and hopefully apply a little more presure

Everyone,

Thanks for your advice, the flywheel is now off after a good dose of lump hammer!!!

Cheers

Matt

For future reference, and anyone reading this thread, haynes recommends the flywheel to be turned so the slot in the crankshaft is horizontal. This is to prevent the C washer slipping off if you have it vertical, which could cause damage to the flywheel/ prevent removal. But it seems MATTinSURREY is now ok
