Hi, i have been offered a mini engine for £100 but im not sure if i should buy it, i dont really need it as i have one in my mini but i would be something that i would rebuild and swap for the engine in my mini.
I dont know a great deal about the engine, except that it is on a front subframe that has drum brakes, it is a 998cc, has a inertia type starter motor, has done around 50,000 miles but i dont know the age.
It looks complete but im not sure what to do?
if it runs dont smoke rattle or knock buy it, if it does any of the for mentioned leave it or pay lots less

Imo £100 isn’t expensive, if it doesn’t smoke rattle or knock as said above.

Ahh, but as it out of the car might be a bit tricky to see how it runs. Perhaps i can use this to knock the price down. what would be a good price?

£100 isnt a bad price though, seems like a reasonable price! Its a gamble you tend to have to take, as a lot of engines for sale are no longer in the car, so you just have to risk it for a biscuit and take the persons word for it If you want it to rebuild then it doesnt matter as much if there is a problem as long as its fixable!

not a bad price considering your getting the subframe etc with it! Long as that isn’t not rotten of course!
id say about 70 quid.
i sold a perfect good 998 engine with smooth gear change and all the rest for 40 quid.
I decided to buy it. but also got two doors, rear window, a front wing, and a few other bits.
I couldn’t get rid of my 998! Think we broke it for spares eventually… I got an offer of £10 and that was all
I got a 998 for free a couple of years back!
I gave one away recently!
I bought one on ebay for £10 about 3 years ago, ran it for a year then took it out for the 1275 engine.
