Keeping Mini Insured But Sorn For Tax? - Winter Storage

My beloved mini is now coming off the road and being stored in a garage for winter.(It’s my second car so it’s only used for summer runs and mini events)

I want to keep it insured (as i’m on a limited mileage anyway the premium is low) but don’t see the need to pay tax while its off road for the next few months. If I sorn it for road tax, can I still keep it insured and be covered or does this void your insurance?

thanks Gemma

talk to your insureance company. Many will change to a Layup (in storage) cover.

I enquired about layup insurance but it was going to cost me £20 more a month than regular insurance.  How sitting in a garage doing nothing is more of a risk than bombing along a backroad I have no idea.

I’ve never heard of this. (Goes to check insurance documents)

Surely you can just keep it insured and SORN it as I have always done.

I have no plans to change my insurance as i say its cheap now as its only a very limited mileage, I just wondered if my insurance is still valid if its not taxed.

I know most people cancel insurance and tax when its put away for winter but as the garage isn’t at my house, I really want to keep it insured, you hear of so many being stolen or damaged :frowning:

Thanks

Check with your insurance, it may make it void so would loose the NCD, it’s unlikely it would make much of a difference but it’s always best to be safe.
If it does cost then just see what the difference is between the insurance rise and the money you save by being SORN. Choose the cheapest route.

as long as your SORN it you are fine.

it is when it is not taxed or SORN that you can have issues.

but again talk to your insurance company as some will offer a layed up cover for sorn cars etc if it is garaged.

You don’t HAVE to get layup insurance, I think people were only suggesting it because it’s usually cheaper.
You’re fine to just sorn it and park it up.

Your insurance policy will probably say the car has to be roadworthy, ie have an MOT, but I’ve never seen one mention Tax.

I leave mine taxed all year as its only £12 a month and I like to be able to take it out if there’s spontaneous sun! Lol
