just been to look at the new mini

italianjob1275 and I have just been down to Leicester to have a look at our new purchase, and OH MY GOD!!! You know people often talk about ‘barn’ or ‘garage’ finds, where a completely original car is found under a heap of rubbish, and found to be in amazing condition - well we have found one of those.

It has little bits of corrosion here and there, front corner of the offside sill, corner of the nearside wing, a panels, but that is it! the interior and headlining are immaculate, absolutely untouched by the passage of time. The engine seems in good nick, it is very clean, and still dynamo equipped! It has the bus twirler steering wheel, with a very nice looking single column switch shroud. The boot is amazing, no rot on the floor, no rot around the subframe mounts at all, only a small pinhole in the offside shock mount. Inside the rear companion pockets it is the same, no rust at all, even the original paintwork (a nice deep blue), and loads of waxoyl. The bonnet is immaculate, even down to the soundproofing on the underside, none of which has sagged or is damp. Both bumpers, and the early Clubby grille are in good nick, and the original Lucas sealed beam headlamps (for what use they are) are intact. The car has had three owners from new, (us being the fourth), and has done a genuine 60000 miles.

He has a couple of other bits which he wants to sell seperately, and I need confirmation that what he has for sale is what I think it is:

He has a 998 cylinder head with the casting

‘12G295’

I believe this is a 998 Cooper head, would this be right?

The car also comes with two complete engines (a+ i think, didn’t actually see them), about 5 boxes full of bits, such as carbs, rear lights, front lights, various trim pieces, and two spare doors and three spare bootlids.

He also has some Cooper S reverse rims which we are going to buy too.

What does everyone think?

Tom and Steve

Yes the 12G295 is the 998 Cooper/MG 1100 head. Buyit buyit buyit buyit BUY IT.

They’re pretty damn good, it’s what I have and even without any porting or flowing it is kind of like most stage 2 heads. Very little shrouding of the valves. Measure the chamber volume before doing this just to check, but you are likely to need it skimmed by about 20 thou since the Cooper 998 mill had funky domed pistons which poked up into the chamber. This means the chamber on this head is MASSIVE!

Once you get this converted to unleaded, buretted, skimed, flowed and ported a bit it is grand!

Oh, and reverse rims are worth a fortune (relatively). Don’t rip the guy off too much now will you?

Nice find, gonna tell us your plans now?

we’re going to give him hopefully £475 for the lot, car, head, rims, everything.

The plans will have to stay secret, as I want to have a proper look at it when I get it home really, give it a good going over, full strip down etc etc

So definitely go for the head and the rims then?

I would personally get all I could. Obviously the head will only be of use to you if you’re building a small block (850, 998, 1098). For example, when we (me and GF) first got a Mini we thought it was a 998 'because that’s what it was registered as and it drove and pulled well and never seemed all that under powered. It was only when I had to change the head gasket a year and a half later that I found it was actually an 850 with the 12G295 head on top! And it still had the 28.4cc chamber!
If you buy it and don’t need it, I’ll buy it off you if the casting is untouched. Nothing wrong with having a spare!

That’s just greedy!

the casting is clean, it comes with valves which will need grinding it, i will also get it unleaded converted, and skimmed too.

thanks for the advice, can’t believe what we’ve found really!

i think i’ll keep it, if it doesn’t go on the clubby (new one) it could go on the 1098, or 848 from the pick-up
