Okay so i got my Mini (1989 Mini City) a few months back and the previous owner removed all speakers and radio equipment.
So christmas is coming up so i want to get some Audio in my car.
Im not looking for anything fancy, just so i can listen to the radio and ipod on the way to college.
Im not looking to have a sub or anything powerful right now, just something to get me started. Much like it would of been as standard.
If iv got this right, all il need is a headunit and speakers?
Iv seen this on Halford website, being a Sony would it be a good starting point. Headunit
I dont know what to look for speakers wise tho. Make and size in relation to where to put them.
How about these? Speakers
Also i dont know if the original wiring is in the car, i presume not.
Sorry for being stupid and asking question most likley asked before but i did search first i promise
im mine i just got basic ICE a jvc head unit and some 6x9’s ( yes i know they are rubbish before all the ICE people start) on the rear shelf because the holes where already cut for them and i could not be bothered making a new shelf’
over all its ok, not great quality but with no sound proofing and the K&N the music is drown out any way
Headunit and some half decent speakers. Don’t pay £200 for a headunit and buy some cheapo speakers because you’re defeating the object.
I personally wouldnt place the speakers in the parcel shelf. You might end up having to cut away metal to get them to fit, and even if you dont, who wants their speakers pointing at the back window?
I have my speakers on a board which fits snugly under the rear seats at a right angle to the floor. So they point towards you, and they’re pretty loud as you’re sort of using the space behind them (under the rear seats) as a boom box
If there’s no wiring at all, dont worry because it’s really easy to wire it all up. There’s a guide in the FAQ section, but basically all you’ll need is a constant live (my point of preference is the starter solenoid, don’t forget to fuse it) and an ignition live, you can take this from an ignition live on the fusebox, I’d double fuse it though to be on the safe side. And then an earth. And a bit of speaker wire. And it’ll be like music to your ears
That HU seems a good deal for what you want - but I would tend to go for some 6x9 speakers instead of 4x4’s.. the last thing you want is to get a few months down the line and wish you’d spent an extra £10-20 on better speakers
if you haven’t got a DIN socket, i’d highly recommend you fit one to any new or existing cabling, then in future it’s a matter of seconds to remove or change your HU. It also makes the car a bit more attractive if/when you do come to sell.

Have to agree here, going on your original question(s) jonez’ set up would be more than enough for what you’re after. You can always build up around it, so to advise (as will others), to spend the lions share of your budget on a decent HU.
Better than anything else get yourself onto the bay or onto anything online, you’ll save yourself getting the rip off of the century. Halfrauds as I know it usually are atleast 30% more expensive than when I buy stuff from online. Yes it takes a lil longer but you can get alot more for your money.
I usually would only spend a max of £60 on a head unit, £100 for a tv, and £150 for a areally good DVD, as for speakers My sound system (4 subs, 2 amps, 4 6" circulars and 4 twweeters and the head unit) only set me back £200. I had to do all the wiring box building etc but its a very high quality good priced system. Just keep your eyes open on the web and outta halfrauds!
you’re in the west midlands…have a look for a nearest ‘bass junkies’ they do decent gear and i normally haggle the price (which is lower than halfords to start) the good thing about buying from a shop is you can look at the kit before you buy and returns if needed, is normally a lot simpler.
Agreed! If you don’t have to halfraud it then don’t!
When in need of parts Theres a lil motorsport shop in Minehead (probably about 4% of the size of the taunton halfords) and I get better deals on sound systems and also car parts, oild, fluids etc than I would at halfrauds. Bigging it up for the lil guy!
