I know you can fit a HS4 carb on a HIF manifold (1.5") only using the diagonal bolts but, can you fit a HIF38 on a HS4 intake manifold?
Thanks much.

Cant see as to why not as dont they fix the same way as a HIF44 its just the throat that is smaller?
I’m not sure we’re talking about the same thing here.
HS4 has a 2 bolt diagonal patern
HIF38 or HIF44 have 4 bolt patern.
Back to original question, lol
Cheers
Yes you can.
Roger that!
Thanks much
No reason why you cant, but most performance manifolds are 4 bolt anyway, so you might aswell.
Why is the hif 38 and 44 4 bolt anyway? its not like they are under any more stress than a hs 4 or 6
This is a parallel question based on the replies above.
I have some old parts carbs. I assume they are HIF-4 as opposed to HIF-38 based on the comments above. Like the HS4, they only have two diagonal mounting bolts as opposed to the square pattern on the HIF-44. The throat is 1.5", so am I correct that this is an HIF-4, not an HIF-38?
I’ve never seen a Hif with less than 4.
There was the later kif type used on K Series engines.

I’m not sure of the original app for my carbs (I bought them to tinker with and have no specific application in mind). I’ll have to post a picture of them so you can comment.
The picture linked below is NOT mine. I Googled for HIF pictures and found this one in someone’s Flicker account.

This picture is for a partially disassembled set of HIF carbs from an MGB.
My carbs are all very similar to the “rear” or “right” MGB carb… the one shown in the LEFT of this picture.
HIFs have 4 bolt holes!
> HIFs have 4 bolt holes!
Roy, thanks for your comment, but please look at the picture link I posted. The linked picture is for paired HIFs (as used on an MGB) and you will note that they ***DO*** have only 2 diagonal mounting holes, not four. My question is/was "is that unique to HIF-4s?
Hmm - well - not seen anything like that before - must be v early HIFs ! Perhaps ‘specials’ made up to fit the MGB standard manifold.
Just google imaged and sods law every image is the wrong angle
Wonder if the change from 2 fixings to 4 came in with the metric conversion..
HIF4 being 1 1/2" where as HIF38 is 38mm
Did find a German site who listed the HIF4 as 1 4/8"
i cant see if anyone has answered the question, isnt what he is trying to work out that he can put a carb with 4 holes onto an inlet manifold with 2, as in… are they the same size just less meat for the other two
i would of said it would fit, but dont take my word as i dont know from experience,
logically i cant think of a reason they wouldnt

You are quite right. It appears there was no clear answer given to the original post. I believe you are correct, there is no reason you shouldn’t be able to mount an HIF-4/38 on the HS4 manifold. The bolt holes really should line up, just fewer studs to deal with. Of course… I’m the buy with the HIFs with only two diagonal mounting holes so you can’t take my word as Gospel.
Roy, I’m fairly confident that the parts carbs I bought were not off an MGB, just similar to them. Perhaps the 2-hole HIFs were early HIF-4 models as Irostoke suggested.
Thanks all.
Holes line up just fine, i can even use the spacer from the old HS4.
I know it seems odd, but reason is i dont have an alloy manifold (or aftermarket), splited the intake manifold when i fitted the header to the car.
DK, i found a similar picture to yours on Wiki , seems they are from an MGB. It doesnt not mention what type of carb it is though (as to HIF38/4)
