Fuel leak and other things!!

Hi all
Ive noticed that after filling the car up (only optimax for the destroyer!!) that by the time ive got home (about 5 miles) that fuel has leaked from the filler neck and down the body of the car to the bumper. Does anyone know what i need to sort this out and if it is a major operation!!??

Also, looking to upgrade the fuel pump but am not sure which to get. Facet etc… Its a standard tank set up from what i can tell.
Also, how awkward is it to change?
Thanks all

Johnny

All depends on the age of the car.

But a new filler cap should sort out the leaky bit.

So its not likely to be leaking from the filler neck round the black seal/gasket?

Its only a weather seal. The filler neck is connected directly to the tank, so unless the body seal has worn through and alowed the filler neck to come into contact with the body causing rub through on the filler neck then I doubt very much feul will be leaking from there. More likely to leak water into the boot. The filler caps cost around £7 and the neck seal is about 50 pence., but to change it you have to partly remove the tank. Getting the tank back in requires a little tollerance on your part as well, and boot lid removal helps a lot.

sounds like the seal on your filler cap isnt woerking propperlly, also you might be filling your mini up to muchm try not to put a smuch fuel in the car when you fill it up

Also make sure the breather on the tank is not blocked… this is a little tube off the top of the tank and should drain out down a tube by the fuel line.

Re the pump, only change the the pump if you have to, ie you suffering from fuel starvation… but to change from a mechanical pump to an electric, first you will have to remove the mechanical one from the back of the engine and blank off the hole ( you can get blanking plates for that ), then join the pipe, and then fit the elecritcs for the pump and install in the boot ( you will also need a fuel filter ) It’s also a good idea to install a fuel cutoff switch in the case of an accident, as the electric pump will keep pumping…

Hi Guess works

Where abouts is the pipe thing you are talking about? In the boot area?

UPDATE

When i was cleaning the car ALL DAY TODAY!! i could every now and then smell petrol when i was at that end of the car. Is that a sign that the filer cap is busted or is it something else??

Hey all,

after scrappin loads of minis down our workshop.. we have found that alot of the fuel tanks start to rot around the filler neck… but only notice this when the tank is out.. if a new filler doesn’t work..maybe take the tank out and have a nose around it..
