Expert Opinions Please

Hi all,

driving along yesterday and the car starts to make load scary noises when the engine is under load.
I think “big end” and so does my neighbour but a few folks on here suggested the head gasket could be the culprit.
So with fingers crossed I whipped it off this afternoon to find a split between pistons 3 and 4 (see pics).
Obviously this is not good but is it enough to cause the really loud rhythmic sound that could be mistaken
for a big end failure ?

All and any advice / opinions tips n tricks much appreciated

Best wishes

The head gasket is the obvious failure from the pictures, what makes you think it is a big end gone? Without taking the engine out and stripping it, its going to be hard to tell. You could refit the head with a new gasket, and see what happens, or strip futher?

Yep - it’s gotta be worth a new gasket and a quick rebuild to see.
I guess I’m on my way down to your lot at Oldbury (again…)

That type of failure does tend to make lots of ugly noises - it should be fine with a new gasket but make sure the head and block face are flat before putting it back together,
