exhaust wrap

Hey

I’ve found a company who can provide copper exhaust wrap, quite cheaply. It is worth getting some for a Mini do you think?

Thanks

Tom

I think there was a topic about this a while ago…somewhere…

The good stuff definately reduces under bonnet temperatures. Which shouldn’t really be an issue unless you’ve got a race spec 1460. otherwise either your fuel or timing is wrong or you have a thermo stat/ rad related problem.

Sort your car out and no need for exhaust wrap.

personally…anything that helps keep things cool under the bonnet can’t be bad…eh? and have you no work to do tom?

Alburglar my engine will be running fine, I was just wondering if its worthwhile to help reduce underbonnet temperatures and possibly stop any issues (not that I’ve had any before) with fuel evaporation etc.

And Nick, no its pretty quiet today! Just browsing when I get a free minute. I agree with you about keeping underbonnet temps down, I’ll have a think.

Copper wrap? Why copper? Most wraps are a mineral fiber or fiberglass cloth about 3/4mm thick. Non-conductive, high-temperature materials are used to keep heat in. Copper, being highly conductive, won’t keep the under bonnet temperatures low. Perhaps you just meant copper-colored. If so, be aware that the color of the wrap won’t typically “be there” for very long.

To paraphrase what’s probably been said in previous threads and give my personal experience… The wrap is worth it. The under bonnet temperatures are indeed lower. Wrap, however, over time is attributed with the premature death of headers and pipes. Ceramic coating gives the same results and doesn’t appear to shorten the life of the pipes.

hmmm, its in this months retro cars (i don’t know if you can get that mag over there dklawson?) bottom left of page 10.

The quote is:

“Copper creates the most abrasive resistant and effective wrap, producing even lower under-bonnet temperatures”.

I thought it a bit bizarre, but it just got me thinking about wrapping the manifold. But thinking about it, I haven’t really got time (MOT on tuesday, no engine yet eeek). Maybe its something I’ll do later on.

I’d heard stories about the wrap leading to increased manifold/pipe breakages dklawson, thanks for comfirming it.

Ceramic coating will be worth investigating, thank you!

if you think about the minis induction system… its poo! Exhaust manifold right under and adjacent to the inlet! Id say that if your using a cone filter and are trying to edge the most performance out fo your car possible then get it!

But copper? thats really confusing

Chrome the manifold, that should help :smartass:

There are very few Mini mags over here to pick from. I generally read more “generic” multi-marque magazines.

Perhaps the copper wrap is a laminate of copper on the outside and ceramic/fiberglass on the inside. The fiber would insulate the pipe while the copper protected the insulator. There is no reason wrapping with plain copper would do anything but empty your wallet.

It is certainly similar looking to any other exhaust wrap that I’ve seen, slightly off white, and a fibre looking finish.

I think you’re right dklawson about the fibreglass/ceramic/copper laminate, it certainly looks that way.

I might get some, but its all a bit short notice! We shall see!

thanks for the advice everyone!
