Model: Mini City E 998 Stage 1 Year: 1986 Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):
Basically the engine when it does fire only seems to run properly on the choke fully on, when its off the idle is quite high but when u rev it the engine splutters and struggles every time and the engine pops and smokes like mad plus i think its misfiring, when i let it idle for a while it starts to splutter and die after a while but it can still run at very low rpm’s if i leave it (must be like 100 or something but then i pull the choke out and it comes back to life) but every time i rev it it makes a lot of nasty noises and puts me off running it because it sounds like its gonna blow up
then if i try and move it i pull the clutch up slowly and it just dies, just need any info to set the engine up properly because im after getting it on the road, im aware it probably needs tuning on a rolling road and possibly new engine components? the mixture is too rich because the exhaust is black and full of soot, ive changed the points and condenser, the original air filter was removed so ive got a cheap cone filter on for now but other than that the engine is original
Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem?
i presume you’ve checked the plugs? need to check the timing too and also whats the water like in the rad? gunky or running low? has the car just been sitting around for awhile and you’ve just gone to start or has just started happening etc?

it was sat for about a year or so but when i bought it i wanted to run it, weren’t to bad at first but its got worse since i got it in may, the spark plugs are black so i clean them and its not long before there sooted up again, i replaced the petrol aswell when i went to start it
ive topped the rad up and there’s no signs of leaks underneath or around the engine and hoses, ive changed the gasket on the water pump because it was weeping but thats sorted now

check the timing with a strobe first if you can get one if the plugs are just getting black pretty quick. the water check was for head gasket faliure, whats the water temp like if it runs long enough to check? check the oil to, is it going white (check dipstick and under the oil filler cap) although under the filler cap it may be white if your running the engine a little at a time? if the oil is changing colour do a compression test

ive got a strobe light i can use so ill set the timing up, the points will need setting wont they as i replaced them, the water seems fine but the temp gauge isnt working but no water is leaking out the rad overflow and the rad is holding water still, the oil is fine and on the full mark with no change in its colour, the car has done over 100k
