engine query...

Right will a metro 1.4 GTI engine fit in a 1980 mini city?

If so what mods and strengthing need doing?

I know i will need uprated brakes and gearbox, can these be taken from the metro?

Need some advice and if its possible before i go down the road of getting a metro engine isn’t it.

cheers

my cusain had a metro engine in his i dont know what u have to change tho he didnt change the brakes and he was comming on the motor way and they raded and he drove it into a tree i feel sorry for that mini! poor thing

The biggest metro engine that will fit in a mini without serious moddification is the 1275cc “A” sieris engine . the 1.4gti could be fitted but it would be a hell of a lot of work , the best way of doing it would to fit the whole metro subframe complete with gearbox , brakes , suspension the lot , this would involve a lot of bodyshell modds.

As woody says, it is a hell of a lot of work to fit the late Metro 1.1 or 1.4 K series engines to the car. They are a lot bigger than the A series, and have the gearbox on the end rather than in the sump.
You need an earlier Metro with an A series 998/1.0/1275/1.3 motor for an easy swap.
Anything can be made to fit with enough hard work though. So if you fancy some serious engineering go ahead.

1.3 engine with do, just somet to give it some poke.

Will a 1.3 engine do straight in on subby?

Anyone know of any guides?

I heard about Swift engines fitting, wots involved there? could i fit a swift GSE which is the 1298cc engine?

There is someone out there doing a subframe to fit a suzuki swift engine into a mini as i have seen a couple in the shows as well as a subframe to fit the vauxhall twin cam engine ! this costs IRO £2000 + you need the engine , box ETC , the brakes and body will also need modding ,a realistic budget for this type of conversion would be nearer £5000 .

think i’ll just go for a 1275 engine then or another mini engine. Thanks guys

:wales: the 1275 A-series engine off a metro will fit straight onto your existing subframe but you will need to change the engine mounts for mini ones aswell as the radiator bottom mounting bracket as the metro has a front mounted rad. The thermostat housing will need changing for a mini one too unless you plan on fitting the metro expansion tank, it sounds complicated but is actually very straight forward if you have some mechanical knowledge.

yup, that sounds like a decent plan. what reg metro would i be looking for (roughly) and can i get one with discs brakes n use them?

I don’t think the reg matters too much, as long as it is A series, try to find a MG metro engine, they have a raicier cam, and more poke!!! Until you kill them that is!!

am going to look for an engine today…

is there any like code or numbers i can look for to make sure the engine is a A series and what cc it is?

am after the biggest i can get in with little hassle etc, guess thats a 1275

Your best bet is to buy a whole Metro with a 1275 engine. You’ll see them for sale in the local paper, ya know “Mechanics sound, bodywork needs TLC” get the sucker for under a £ton. Swap the engines over, thieve any other useful bits, then tow the Metro to the scrapyard. Bish bosh.

Just make sure its an Austin or MG Metro, not a Rover.

Found a 1275 for £150 with unleaded head etc.

Guy says he got shafts n discs capilers etc for £50 and will fit it all for £150

total, £350 is it worth it?

Found a 1275GT engine in a scrappy for £40, in abit of a state.
Only id was engine id, 12h907aa 148767 (info found, 12H907 standard 1275 Metro, pre October '84 )

nm, i bought a 988cc engine n some white wellers 10" for £100 inc del. nice chap he was.

I’ll buy that 1275GT engine if its gunna be good, no granutee it runs tho, so risky £40.

Not much of a risk, the core value of the crank is about £40. I’d buy it strip it and rebuild it if I were you. If it’s genuine 1275gt then even if it’s kippered the parts that are good can be sold off.

I almost feel bad for butchering my 1275GT, and ripping out its engine… :\
