Hiya,
Is it possible to take an Engine out with the Wheels still on, possibly diconnecting the Drive Shafts only??

Last time I removed an engine from a mini i had no crane.. or help. I unbolted the front subframe and gearbox linkage from shell and just picked the shell up rolled it backwards on the rear wheels and set it down. If you do that make sure you pack wood blocks front and rear to support subframe - else it will rock forward and backwards on the wheels and can easily land on your feet when your moving shell.
Hiya, i was concidering doing that, however ive heard it can be an A*se to line everything back up when she gets put back together, and the radiator usually gets a good bashing, from this process, so im not too keen on doing that.

It’s easier to do by yourself out the top.
Jack the car up
Remove the wheels
Break loose the top ball joint (this will give the axle/joints room to move out enough)
You can either now pop out the inner CV’s from the diff (after draining oil), or pull the rubber off and pull out the cage with the balls.
May need to lift the motor some to get them all the way out)
If you have a brake servo…just release it and pull it up and over the wing (on a cloth) with lines attached. (no need to bleed later…the lines wont break)
Once you’ve got engine steadies, exhaust, shifter, electrics, fuel all unhooked…start lifting the motor.
Once the motor is out…just losely reconnect the top BJ’s and put the wheels back on…then you can move the car around.
**Make sure you’ve got the car on stable stands when under the car undoing stuff etc.**
I’m sure I’ve forgotten something…I’m sure others will complete the list
Shouldnt take to long put the subby on Axle Stands, and attach the Crane to the engine! jobs a goodun!
i have just take the engine out of my car. the lower rubber engine mounts need un bolting as well. I have also put some clean sandwich bags over the ends of the drive shafts to stop the grease picking up any grit and dirt when moving it around. the drive shafts are held within the sub frame therefore just spin harmlessly in the sub frame.
greg.
It is possible to release the pot joints from the gearbox without splitting the hubs. Lift the engine a little with the crane then swing it to one side and lever out the opposite pot joint. Now swing it the other way and lever out the remaining pot joint.

Haha, that job was done for me, it decided to snap on the last journey it made before being Garaged
