I’m in the process (literally, now) of fitting a new stereo to my Mini.
I’ve got 12V ignition live (verified that it works with a meter) connected to the RED wire going into the ISO loom.
My earth is screwed to the dash rail.
But the stereo will not turn on.
The manual is as helpful as a chocolate teapot, so..
Do I NEED to put a constant live in, for it to work?
If not, what else can I do?
Would appreciate a quick reply as I’m doing it now
Cheers.

Yes i believe you do need a constant live. This is so the stereo can ‘remember’ settings such as FM presets & bass, mid, high settings.
It only needs a permanent live to keep it’s “memory”
Should switch on and work if both lives are patched into the ignition live and the ignition is on.

There is definately the wiring to support it but I thought that was just to remember settings and radio presets etc.
Just jumper one up and see if it works!
I know it “needs” a constant live to remember the presets but I wanted to know whether it needs the constant live connected for it to work at all.
I’m not that fussed at the moment of it to remember my presets I just want it working
So, I need to joint the red and yellow coming out of the stereo loom, onto the iggy live?

Very likely,
If it’s coded, has a clock, preset tuner memory it will.
most have 2 feeds - permanent and one so it turns off when you take the key out.

Yup, you’ll need both the switched and permanant live to be connected to 12v before the stereo will work.
Just connect them both to the switched live and that should at least give you some action!!

What he said - or was it Mrs shifty saying it…

Balls to this I’ll jsut send it UG! wait.. its my day off and I’m UG anyway
Mmm.. sorted it now, just joined the two red/yellows to the iggy live.
I now have a stereo which isn’t from 1981.
BACK OF THE NET!!!
I just need to fuse it now… what rating blade fuse should I use, 15amp?

Yup, that should get it working. This way it won’t work without the keys in the ignition. Don’t think it’ll remember your sound settings or radio presets either though.
i know that the fuse in the back of my stereo is 10amp, so should think that should do it for an inline one too.

whenever i wire in a stereo i always put one wire to the ignition and the other to the permanent live and an earth then the stereo should work
if you put both the red and yellow to the permanent live then you will have to switch on and off the stereo every time you get in or out the car
if you have it wired in to the ignition then it will switch off the stereo when you switch off the ignition avoiding the risk of leaving the stereo on and having a flat battery in the morning

I’ve sorted it now.
Decided to run a fresh constant live from the fusebox, into the stereo.
It all works!!
Cheers guys.
