Hi guys ive an 86 mayfair 998cc
Anyone be able to tell me what type of distributor cap and rotor i need for it?
Or even how do i know what type i have on mine?

Various different types fitted over the years - may be as well to go to Hellfrauds - and take the cap in and ask them to give you a new one same as!

Oh dear - they don’t get any better do they. Try again with local ‘autoparts’ type place ? Is the dizzy held in by one bolt and a ‘fork’ - or by two bolts and a clamp arrangement ?

Its held in by 1 bolt and a fork
I can make out the numbers 1586 on the side of it too…

It’s a Mini so there’s a good chance it’s not the same dizzy it left the factory with so the registration number isn’t a reliable clue.
You should have a choice of 3
Lucas electronic ( cap held on with screws )
Lucas type 45 or 59 ( the same cap )
Ducellier.
Google up some piccies - The rotor arms are a lot different and Ducelliers also have the condenser screwed to the outside.
