CV joint nuts?

Can anyone answer the really simple question of how to tighten the nuts up on the CV joints? When I try to do them up the CV joint spins with it!

Get a mate to put his/her foot on the brake pedal

Ahhh, think I may have got my joints mixed up, the ones the the bottom and top arms go to and allow the hub to swivel.

Balljoints?
I just wedged something in there so it went against the endstop and then turned it like hell with a 3foot breaker bar!

the ball joint nuts?

my technique is to place a jack under the bottom arm and apply slight pressure to the hub, lifting it up slightly. This pushes the tapers on the ball joints together and should allow you to tighten the nuts up.

It also works with the track rod end too. Its always a good idea when re-assembling to make the sure the threads are clean on the ball joint, and lightly grease the threads to prevent corrosion.

Also make sure when you re-assemble that you don’t hit the threaded part of the ball joint against the sides of the holes in the top/bottom arms. If you do this its possible to damage/distort the thread, making it very hard to get the nut on - it usually means a replacement ball joint it needed.

If the threads on nut and pin are clean and you turn the nut gently and slowly you should have no problems. If necessary use jack/brute force to push pin taper into hole in arm to provide some resistance to turning.

Hmmm, certainly doesn’t help that the engine/subframe is out the car!!

too much grease !! clean them off and re insert them, if they still spin, then get a length of rope ( or a tiedown strap ) and clamp the top and bottom arms together ( you could even tension it more with a screwdriver twisting the rope.. (like a bowsaw)

Ah rite, cool, cheers for the help guys, getting my steering rack from MiniSpares tomorrow hopefully so should get some more done on it this weekend.

I don’t know why I called them CV joints!!! I knew they were balljoints… :erm:
