i have been inspecting my carb and noticed that with the piston pushed right up (via the air filter elbow), the piston is quite lose and can wobble a bit? i had a look at another carb i have, and with the same test it is a snug fit. i am guessing that i shouldnt have movement in the piston? what are the potential problems of having a wobbly piston?

Just taking some guesses here, but I assume your piston bearing is missing a couple of balls and the piston is only moving on the plastic guide. as long as it is moving freely and not sticking, that may not be a problem. You may want to take the bell off, remove the O-clip from the piston and get it out the bell and have a look at the bearing in the bell.
