Bulbs for a mini.

Hello everyone.
I am looking forward this week to have a play with my Cooper. I have had it now a couple of three weeks, and dues to weather, work , and women, I haven’t been able to do anything to it, but now I have a week off work so I can dabble.
Now then , a quick question.

What bulbs do you guys have in your Mini’s headlights. Mine is a 97 P reg cooper, and the bulbs dont seem to be the best.
Can I upgrade the bulbs at all, or are there any other better upgrades to do.
What are all these Ice Blue / xenon bulbs like that I see in my local halfords. Are they worth the money.

Please if you could take a minute or two and reply with your views.

Rgds
Neil

Sorry, forgot to mention the spots also. Can these bulbs be upgraded to brighter more powerful bulbs. I am going to clean the lenses inside and out to try and get them a bit brighter as they seem a bit dirty.

Hi Tyrant,
Assuming you don’t have sealed beam headlights you can fit whatever you like.
If they are sealed beam - e.g. you can’t get the bulb out the you can buy an upgrade for about £30 from most mini shop places. I got mine two years ago and am still happy with them on Halogen bulbs.

Dave

Nah Dave, they aint sealed. I can just remove the bulbs no problem. I think the dirt is not helping the cause. I was really just wondering what these other bulbs really are like. The xenon and Ice blue bulbs that you can buy. Do they really make much of a difference.

Neil,

Okay, in that case I’d go Xenon, I changed the bulb on my bike over and it’s better now… Ice-blue wouldn’t suit the car IMHO.

Dave

It must be really filthy, twinpoints should have reasonably good headlamps. Do you have the beam height adjuster set right?

If you do get some funky bulbs, then read the packs carefully. Most of them are OK from Halfords and places like that, but there are some chavier versions which are not road legal. And nothing over 55/60 watts is legal either.

They are quite dirty. Perhaps its just me, and the fact that I am lower down. In my people carrier with its headlights , it just seems so much better. Probably as I can see more of the road with the headlights being that much more higher.

I am not used to the mini yet, having only had it for a couple of weeks. Perhaps its just me.

I bought some angel eye headlamps for my cooper last summer, but when i bout them decided to go with the expensive xenon ones, they r really weird to be honest, but they are absolutley awsome to drive with, can see so so so much better.

sorry i cant really be more specific on them, last summer was a long time ago…lol

If you got 150-200 quid get a xenon conversion kit, and your darkness days will be over

just dont put higher wattage bulbs in as the wiring wont take it

A good fix is the Quadoptic bulbs… my lights (on a '95 model) were terrible when I got the car - seriously yellow! The quadoptics made a real big difference - around £25 - £30.00 at good Mini parts dealers! (and some good dealers give a discount to tmf members )

He doesn’t need them, Twinpoints have H4 headlamps as standard.

i got some H4 blue tint zenon bulbs

> just dont put higher wattage bulbs in as the wiring wont take it

this was what i was thinking. What is the standard wattage then?

55/65w

Standard H4 bulbs
