Anyone Know Anything About Diesels?

Hi all
My reliable 1.5d lump has decided to take a holiday and break down. In the last few months the car seems to have kept revving after releasing the accelerator . It sounded like you were pressing the clutch before lifting off the accelerator. This slowly got more and more noticeable but not so much it would effect the driving. In the last week it did start to affect the driving. When you released the accelerator it would rev and with the clutch still engaged it would accelerate away from you. A little unnerving when your foot isn’t on the go peddle. In the last days it then seemed to be trying to stall and was very hard to keep going until the car warmed up eventually stalling a few times when just driving down the road at 20 mile an hour or so. Eventually it did stall and then just wouldn’t start.
Can anyone give me a clue as to where to start on diagnoses or things to test etc. The glow plugs are under a year old and that’s about al the maintenance it has had.
Any help would be great

assuming it’s a turbo the first bit sounds like the turbo is on its way out, engine running on oil leaked from the turbo. second bit if its connected could be siezed turbo?

if it is the turbo leaking do not drive the car, will end up blowing itself up!!

The first bit also sounds like a gunked up Idle Control Valve. Common fault with petrol injection engines. Usually taking it off and giving it a VERY good clean with carb cleaner tends to do the trick for a while. Can’t guarantee it’s the solution of course…

common things to check are fuel pipes and fuel filter (worth a change anyway if u never have), glow plugs, any vaccum pipes.

i dont think diesels have an idle control valve as such like petrol cars do. I believe depending on engine, it will be controlled via the fuel pump. I had an older diesel car which needed a solenoid replacing in the side of the fuel pump, it could be something like this which is causing the fault.

thanks for the replies
I was thinking of checking the solenoid
I have heard that water in the fuel can cause the reving! has anyone else heard this.
There is no turbo on this car. It is a completely mechanical fuel pump as well.
thanks

If it’s anything like the n/a 1.9d Peugeot/Citroen engines, there’s an advance solenoid on the fuel pump, my mate had a problem of his van idling at 1200rpm and it was down to a faulty solenoid sticking. Could be the opposite of the cold start thing if it’s not working?

in my opinion it could be the injectors. i dont think it would be burning oil cus u wouldnt be able to turn the engin off without stalling it, correct me if im wrong
