Well, I’m a bit worried. I went into town to do a few bits and bobs, and had a bag of chips which I ate at the train station. When I got on the train to go home, I sat down and I could feel this rumbling in my chest. I honestly didn’t know what it was, just this constant rumble/vibration in my chest that felt like it was shaking my body. After a while I realised it was my heartbeat! It was so fast I couldn’t count it. It seems to be alright when I’m standing up, but when I sit down (like I am now) it speeds up a lot - right now it’s about 220 per minute. Does anyone know why this is?
if your heart rate is 220 bpm i would ring the docs or try nhs direct it could be nothing but is it worth it? they will get all the deatails they need to piece together what is wrong.
hope this helps
I’ll agree with the above could be PSVT could be nothing worth checking though.
Thanks for the replies. I think I’ll ring my mum as she’s a paramedic and see what she says. I’m just getting out of breath really really easily (walking around or up the stairs etc.) and my heart rate shoots up, and I feel quite dizzy when that happens.
Cheers,
Ben.
I have a heart condition called atrial fibrillation in which my heart occasionally speeds up and at the same time doesn’t feel as if it’s doing a very good job. It takes twice as much effort to do whatever I’m doing at the time (except sitting down!). It lasts up to an hour. There doesn’t seem to be any treatment except I’m on a small daily dose of aspirin. I have no trouble getting travel insurance and I never let it stop me from trying anything strenuous.
Don’t worry, but get checked out.

Thanks Teapot. It seems to have slowed down now - about an hour since it started - but it might speed up again if I move around etc. If it happens again I’ll try and have it checked out.
Cheers,
Ben.
> If it happens again I’ll try and have it checked out. Definitely get your mum’s opinion for starters. It isn’t necessarily the same condition as mine. A couple of times I’ve had a portable monitor taped to my chest for 24 hours to try to record the condition but of course it won’t happen to order. Mine seems to be getting less frequent but I’m an idle sod retired!
Also, Have you ever had any lower back pain ?? Odd, but my old man has various bits wrong with his back and when he sits his heart increases and he got told its due to the problem with the base of the back, that when he sits it causes the nerve to abnormally compress, which causes blood flow problems, which then causes his heart to race in order to try to compensate
When it happens, do you get pins and needles in your legs / feet ?? or any numbness or pain in your legs ???
It can honestly be anything… i’d ring NHS direct or your local on call doctors…
I have some medical experience but i’m far from a doctor, and wouldn’t want to disclose your problems on a public forum.
While you’re waiting for NHS direct or the doctor, have a quick scout around, and find out if anybody in your family has any history of heart problems…
Cheers
Tom
i agree with above. it could be a number of things and with out the relevant info everyone is just stabing in the dark. i would go and see your mum or just chat to her she will be conserned im sure. hope all is ok let us know how you get on
Did you talk to your mum?
Sometimes it could also be anaemia, best get yourself to the doctors for some blood tests and a check up.
