998 Mini City With Stage 1 Has Lost Its Oomph

Model: 998cc Mini City E with Stage 1 kit fitted
Year: 1990
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

My Mini recently went in for its MOT at a garage that specialises in Minis. One of the things they did to get it to pass after failing was to adjust the timing and carb to get the emissions level down. Ever since then the Mini has no “oomph”, I have to drive with the choke out from cold much longer, and after stopping if I try to accelerate fast it feels like the car is about to stall so much so that if I need to cross dangerous intersections I ease the choke out a little so I no I’ll make it without the car stumbling across.

At idle the car sounds fine, the spark plugs and tailpipe both indicate that the mixture is ok, and the oil in the carb dashpot is at the correct level.

What do I need to adjust in order to get back the ability to accelerate without the car feeling like it’s about to stall?

Fun fact, mini’s tend to not get through MOT on emissions. They probably turned down the mixture so you’re running REAL lean right now.

So next time you car feels it has no go, yank the choke out. If it goes fine then, then the mix is off.

Its real weird, we run 3 carb minis, all of them pass MOT’s on emmisions and all of them accelerate really well.

For that year of car you want emmisions below 3.5% , I normally have ours set to around 3%.
It’s possible they overdid it when they weakened the mixture.

How long as the stage one been fitted, stage 1 kits don’t always come with the best needle.

obviously in this weather it does take longer for the engine to get upto temp.

The Stage 1 kit hasn’t been on for long but it was running fine after I fitted it, details of which can be found here.

I’ll try adjusting the mixture.

It was like this before the weather started getting cold. It’s about -2 degrees in Ipswich right now with no snow as yet.

Just out of interest would it be a good idea to run water from the cooling system through the inlet manifold during the winter months?

DTXDave

Most don’t. I do have my inlet connected to the heater system. I have yet to have any complains about it.

Sorry to hijack, but does it make that much difference? Unsure as to whether or not to plumb mine in, or where.

In reply to the OP though, its most probably a lean mixture, my mini came out of its last MOT going in at 10.5% (stupidly rich) and coming out at 1.7% (stupidly lean) Was almost like the car was running on fresh air, a series engines like to be a tiny touch on the rich side.

You need a rolling road session mate…
My mini was fitted witha MSC stage 1 kit and timing set up according to the instructions. It ran nice and smooth on idle. Howvever, whenever i actually drove anywhere, I needed to pull the choke out to get anywhere! A RR at Minisport sorted all this out. The needle needed profiling because there was poor fuelling throughout the rev range and the timing needed adjusting also.

I had this kind of thing after fitting my stage 1 kit (stuttering under acceleration etc…). I tweaked the adjustment slightly and now it runs much better.

Ideally it’ll need a tune up, but as a ‘for the time being’ kinda fix (i found myself getting stuck, spluttering on roundabouts), i’d richen the mixture slightly.

Have you had the tappets ajusted they may be too tight…
