It would be cheaper and possibly easier to fit a 16v XE engine rather than a 16v head on a mini. Have you seen how much KAD sell the heads for?? !!!
If you buy the Jack Knight or KAD heads, not much work is required really as they are direct replacements. It is a good idea to do lots of work though to make sure the bottom end is in tip top condition and the gearbox is strong enough. If you want to convert a BMW K-series head you need to do loads, but mainly to the head casting itself (this is the casting the KAD head is based on anyway, but the Jack Knight is completely custom).
As far as power goes, bucket loads. I think the minimum they talk about is 120 bhp in road spec with carbs, up to about 160 bhp in race trim with full Weber Alpha injection. Obviously it depends on the displacement as well as the tuning though.
Cost, also buckets sadly. I think the KAD head will run you around £3500 minimum, and the Jack Knight even more. When I phoned JKD a few years ago to ask about their 16v head, they told me they couldn’t possibly supply one without building the whole engine and it would cost around £15,000. I told them to *man danglies* as you can imagine. That may be why JKD has been completely restructured this year in a management buyout, they weren’t exactly friendly in the past. I went into their place once and was amazed at all the cool stuff they make for Minis, but they don’t tell anyone about it so they don’t sell much. So their head will be much cheaper soon.
Personally I would rather fit one of these than a Vauxhall or other engine if I could afford it. It is still an A series after all, and you don’t need to extend the bonnet by 4".
i should thing the insurance would be much higher to if you ge tone in yours neil itle be imposible to get insured especialy as uve had all this other work done
