1380 Not Going To Fire!

Hi guys was wondering if any one had any ideas to why my engine wont fire all i get it loads of back fire.

I have had to re’time the engine as the timing belt slipped and knocked the timing out as the piston was hitting the cam.

No damage was done but all put back with a new duplex gear and chain and re’timed. I have changed the leads round to every way possible but with still no luck. I am at the point of giving up now as it has been so long doing this between work and other issues.

So if any one can help thank you

You say you have tried the leads every way possible? they need to be the confirmed the right way then you can at least put that issue to bed. Are you getting a spark at each plug when cranking?

yes that was the first thing i have checked when i said every way i meant 1342 1 radiator end.

what about the plugs sparking? have you tried laying the plugs on the engine to see if all four spark? 1342 going anti clockwise round the cap and 1 pointing at 1pm on the firing stroke? could it be 180 degrees out, have you removed the dizzy?

First thing is to check all 4 are sparking, I have tried cranking for ages before realising the king lead is on the workbench!

+1

As CityEPete says make sure when checking the dizzy with the rotor arm pointing at number 1 lead at 1pm when the engine is on it’s firing stroke - keep an eye on the valves as you rotate the engine clockwise from the radiator end.

The inlet valve would have opened and closed with the exhaust valve next on that cylinder to open. When the no 1 piston is at TDC the rotor arm should be at 1pm ish.

Have you static timed the ignition since the rebuild or taken it was ok before should be ok now? Points or electronic ignition?

Just going to double check be back in a mo.

Right just reset the timing up again ie on the marks piston 1 tdc rockers on no1 closed no4 rocking looked at the dizzy rotor arm pointing downwards so yep 180 degrees out great thanks for all your help guys I am not just going to put the leads in that posision I am going to reset it properly thanks again.

Fingers crossed then :-)…

If you have to take the dizzy drive out be careful!

Use a stud screwed into the centre when moving it in and out or it could fall into the gearbox like my first one did :expressionless:

No worrys thanks I am going to leave it in as need to make sure it will line up with number one plug once I have turned it 180 degrees

Hi guys just been out and again to check it again and the timing looks good once i have dot to dot NO:4 is firing timing marks are set at TDC on the pulley rotor arm pointing to NO:4 on the dizzy. turn the engine over and the rotor arm is pointing to NO:1 when it should be firing but still wont fire up just keeps turning over???

I have fuel and spark the leads are in the correct position NO:1 top right going anti clock wise ect ect.

Any help will be appreciated :)

May sound a silly question but are leads connected 1,3,4 then 2 to plugs?

Yep 1342 anti clock wise around the dizzy cap.

are you sure cam timing is not 180 out?

1st (if you haven’t checked already) that no 1 piston is on its firing stroke and the rotor arm is pointing to the top rightish of the dizzy.

Then make sure your leads are like this:
