12h209 Engine

Hi there,

I have just picked up a complete 12H209 engine, this was supposidly removed from a 1968 MG 1300 many years ago, the engine has sat in a lock-up since!

It comes with twin carbs, I don’t think they are 1 1/2 su’s though, they look slightly smaller!

Supposidly the engine has only done 38,000 miles from new!

Does anyone know anything about this type of engine? Is it simliar to a cooper s?

Thanks

Daniel

Probably twin HS2s, which are 1 1/4.
Can’t help much more than that though.

Can you supply the entire engine number?

> Can you supply the entire engine number?

The engine number is 12H-209-H13076

I think the SU carbs are 1 1/4.

1968 was the year that the spec changed from single carb to twins, so that could well be original.

The engine is complete with gearbox, radiator, manifolds, carbs etc..

How much would you say its worth? Just want to know whether I got it for a good price!

I am not planning on selling it, i’m going to keep it for my mini.

Even if it’s low mileage, it’s been sat for so long that you can’t garuntee what the insides are going to be like so bargain a quick rebuild and check over into the price you paid… Is it seized or will it turn over by hand? If it had such a low mileage,.. why was it removed?

Got any pictures?

It does turn over by hand, the engine was removed because the car was crashed into years ago. The car was then broken for spares. I got 4 rust free MG1300 doors with it too! All the parts have just sat in a lock-up for years!

I don’t have any pics, I could take some though!

Well I would (in my opinion) be worth splitting the box off the block to make sure everything is spotless and clean before attempting to start it up. There’ll probably lots of hardened crud+oil in the bottom of the sump, things like waterpumps seize with time and it would definatley be worth replacing the headgasket.

could be a very nice little motor.

Yeah, I think I will do that! Would be nice to have a check over it! I think the carbs will need a rebuild too, its been sat with the air box off it..

Can the gearbox be used in a mini? I’ll need to get some pics taken!

I believe the set-up was transverse,… like the mini. So it should drop straight in with the right engine mounts.

Original spec of the engine was:

1275cc transverse
High compression
Twin carbs
Lucas C40 dynamo
Crankcase ventilation
Standard ratio remote control gearbox - all speed synchromesh

The gearbox, if original, will use the alloy remote type gearchange not the rod type. Will fit in a Mini but need the rear mount changing.
