Well i have a 998 with a stage one kit on so im guessing cylinder head is the next stop. (its a 91 if it makes any difference)

The ones I’ve found out about are:
12g206
12g295
12g904
And then a new stage 2 one from minisport.

The problem is: which just bolt on, and which would need the block pocketing?
Does the stage 2 one value the HUGE price diff?
She’s only ever gonna be road use with maybe the odd track day.

Is a head the best bet or should i look at rockers cams etc?

Cheers James
Ps how do i tell if its a or a+ as other ain’t the original engine in there

The 12g295 is basically a better version of the 12g206 and these should fit without any other modifications but may require skimming to get the correct CR.
The 12g940 will require either valves sinking into the head or pockets in the block but would be the head to use for absolute maximum power.

The next step would be a suitable cam, that will match the CR and head of your engine.
There would be no point in having a fully worked, high compression head with a standard cam, and likewise it would be pointless to have a near-standard head with a very wild cam.

Forget any mysterious/expensive ‘Stage 2’ head… the 12G940 (not 904) head is by far the best. Just sink the exhaust valves into the head IF there is not 320 thou clearance. Do not waste money on fancy rockers - do look out for an MG Metro camshaft. It has ‘standard’ lift and is ideal with the 940 head.

have you looked at the 12g202 head much better than standard similar to a 12g295 but has slightly smaller valves they where fitted on all 1098cc minis and are really cheap compared to the 12g295 as all the turbo boys whant them

My 1098 has a 12g202 head and MG Metro Cam, and am planning to do exactly what Bmcecosse has Listed above ^ with a 12g940b head and some decent valves.
For a 998, I would suggest getting as mentioned a 12g295 or 202 head if you dont go the 940 route, with a decent cam profile (266 [MG Metro Profile] Mg Metro or even a 276?) But the latter my be a bit too ‘overkill’ for a 998. Setup with Your Stage 1 kit, You could have a tidy little engine!
